rear main seal leak
 

I just hit the 50,000 mile mark in my 99 and discovered that the rms has a leak. I was told by my mechanic that the dealer may have a re-call for the seal that I may be able to get fixed at no charge. My question is how do I go about getting the dealer to do this for me & how long can I drive without fixing the leak. It's not leaking that bad b/c the mechanic had to look real good to see it. I say a little oil in the driveway & took it in to be checked out.

There is no recall. Might ask for a good will seal replacement, but you are out of warranty. Does the car have a prior history of leaks.

that would be great but are we just wishfull thinking are they just giving us false hope. I have a small leak myself! the last thing I expect from a porsche is a leaky engine. sorry venting a little bit! anyone else can confirm or deny this?

I don't know of any history of leaks. But the car still runs great and the leak is very small. What should I expect to pay to have the leak fixed? I plan on selling the box to get a 996. I want to have the leak fixed before I sell the car.

Yeah i have a minor leak also. Dont worry about it. No damage will be done. You don't need to have it fixed but if you really want to then good luck getting them to replace it for nothing.

This is a common malady in Boxsters and frankly, in 911s too!

I would try to work the dealer and perhaps the factory too.

Not sure how likely this is however, as this seems to be an issue that they cannot or will not address.

Strange given how talented these Porsche engineers are.

I spoke with the dealer today and they said it was out of waranty and the total cost to fix the seal would be 1300-1500 dollars. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I don't want to sell the car to someone knowing it has a leak. I wouldn't be able to live with that. I was looking to get a 911 but if the problem is common the Jaquar XK8 is my next choice.

I would not rule out the 911 because of this issue. Not everyone has one nor will develop one. I would be happy to chat with you on this further. I have a 911 for sale (I am a dealer) and know a fair amount about them.

BTW-A good independent shop can do the job for a bit less than the number you quoted.



I also know about the XK8 and frankly, all exotics have there issues. Xk8s have timing chain and block metal issues as well.
