Worm in Crankcase

This is very weird. My car is being worked on at a local shop and when they removed the oil pan cover they found a large earthworm in the screen for the oil pickup. It was obvious that it had been in there for some time but was still rather supple and well preserved. I cannot figure out how in the world it got in there and why it was not totally fried by the heat. The car was in to have the air oil seperator replaced and a piece of plastic from the oil filler tube broke during the disassembly and fell into the crankcase. Pan had to come off to fish out the piece of plastic. Any ideas?
