Fair Price for my car
I want to sell my 01 Boxster S. It's silver paint with black interior.
Here's the bad thing it has almost 107k miles on it. What should I be asking for it? Any ideas are appreciated. |
what sort of options do you have? 18" wheels? Litronics? upgraded stereo? hard top? any aero? Did the car have major servicing at 60 and 100K miles? original clutch? How many miles on the tires? What sort of condition is the paint and windshield in? Any dents or body work that needs to be done?
I often check Autotrader or Ebay to see if there are similar cars not attracting any bids. If the cars is at $18,000 and there are zero bids well then I can sorta infer that the price right now is somewhere below that. But often times the bidders back out of deals so you have to take the price action with a grain of salt. I'm curious about your car because I have an '00 S with about half the mileage. In the current economy that is BAD for sellers I don't think I would sell my car unless I absolutely had to. But with deprecriating assetts its better to get what you can while you still can and take advantage of the good deals on other cars. |

$13.2k trade in $16.3k private party $21.0k retail If you look at Nada Guide : $15.9k trade in $18.9k retail There are 5 - 2001 Boxsters for sale in the US on AutoTrader : Highest Price : $18,890 Lowest Price : $13,800 Average Price : $16,895 ( these all have between 100k and 109k miles ) I would say somewhere between $16.3k and $17.4k private party. Just bought my yellow on black 2001 S at a dealer for 16,990 with 82K and outside in excellent shape and interior is fair so take that with a grain of salt :cheers:

What I've found from my recent research is that the Boxster prices don't really factor in the year as much as other cars.
To find an accurate price I'd recommend checking Autotrader and other sites for all Boxster S' in the 2000-2002 range with similar miles across the country. If you can't specify an S model just manually go through the listings, because there are definitely alot more base Boxsters available. As a private seller you can use the car's options and service records to your advantage when working with potential buyers. |

you can always ask for 18k and see if u get any interest. Its easy to drop the price down if nothing works out. Honestly thought, its such a buyers market right now that I dunno who would pay more then 14-ish for an old boxster with over 100k but theres always people who don't know better lol

Does anyone have feedback on the edmunds.com web site. I have used them for new car pricing and it is very accurate.
When it comes to used car pricing for Porsche they seem to really low ball the value. For example a 2001 boxster S in silver with 107k miles in average condition shows a trade in value of $11,528...a private party value of $13,437 and a dealer retail of $15,356. This just doesn't seem right compared to the other web site pricing. Usually I really like the Edmunds site for info and pricing but this really makes me wonder... |

Your car is cheap enough that the correct advertising might get lots of people interested.
Here's what I have found is the best technique for selling a car: If the car is over the price of a cheap new car then advertise in autotrader, cars.com etc. Always buy the expensive ads so your listing gets noticed. Price it aggressively. Use hyperbole extensively. Be a loud salesman. You need to separate your car from the herd by making the price lower and the car sound more attractive. You are going after the real shoppers who want a Boxster and know the market. But if the car is at the price of a cheap new car then use a completely different technique because you are going after a completely different buyer. This is an impulse shopper. They did not know they wanted or could afford a Boxster until they see yours. Put the car on the street. Make the biggest sign possible with only two things on it price and phone. Make the price $1000 more than you want. Be a quiet salesman. |

Every day on my commute I pass a European used car dealer that has had the same 2003 Carrera for sale for almost 7 months. It's mint and was priced fairly when I saw it late last year. I'm not sure if Edmunds and KBB change their valuations frequently but the last 12 months have seen some insane bargains.
I would have loved to pull the trigger on a Turbo or C4S but with $5 gas coming I'd rather wait to see how low the prices will go regardless of whether the credit market recovers. |
