IPOD? I know it's been asked 1000 times

OK. I called every dealer in the state of California, and you know California has a lot of Porsche Dealers. I gotten wide answers from any day soon to the Part is in order, but don't know the arrival date.

I know this has been asked like 20 billion times. But does anyone have any reliable information?

I hate the aftermarket stuff, I'm an O.E.M. guy.

Thanks ahead.

What exactly are you asking? You post isn't very clear, what car and radio do you have?

I was referring to any OEM plans for some type of IPOD connector to the sound system with controls. I have a 987 with PCM.

So is there a way to actually hard wire the Ipod into the radio? I have one of those wireless things you plug into the cigarette lighter and it sort of sucks.

hq, talked to the dealer a week ago and he told me that next month (June) they'll have something. FM, hardwired, he couldn't/wouldn't confirm. Probably like Apple, you never know exactly until they release - you know, hush, hush, - if you talk, you go to the firing squad. :D

At least they're trying something - everyone has a hard connector nowadays.

Cheers :)

I have no idea about how to put an iPod in a 987 other than an FM transmitter, or just replacing the radio. But I would think since everyone has an iPod they will do something soon, and possibly make it something you can upgrade.

I agree with the OP, I have read so many ipod related threads and still have no real clue how to go about getting my radio to play MP3s. I have a a 06' 987 with bose, i believe CDR-22. No Navi. No CD changer. I think it has MOST, but how do i know for sure. The option that has been posted in the other threads i think is for cars pre-MOST? but i'm am not sure. The dealer in raleigh, nc is not helpful. any advise would appreciated. All I really want is an extra input.

My 2003 Boxster S has MOST. I use the Dension Gateway 500. Don't know if they make anything for the 987, but it works pretty well with the fiber optic stuff in my 986.

I hope they do something you can upgrade to because I certainly won't replace my whole radio. I was under the impression I could play MP3's burned to a CD but I tried it and they wouldn't play. My dad asked a guy who does stereo installations what I might be able to do and he said use the wireless thing. I just don't particularly like the sound quality. I have to turn it up really loud to even hear it well.

LoveBunny,

Good News - They do have a solution to play an Ipod in your car :

http://www.dension.com/icelinkgateway500.php

Bad News - It's $450 :

Have the gateway 500 installed in my 2005 with a bose system CDR-24. Works great if you shuffle the music ... radio buttons cryptic to me to select songs, artists, tracks, etc. End up unplugging Ipod and resetting to shuffle all then plugging back in ... it does advance and scan easily with the tune knob as well.

Overall, the sound is GREAT!

Ouch! And that's apparently a sale price too. Plus I'd have to find somebody to install it. Definitely something to keep in mind though.

987 and MP3's. It took a few tries ( I must have made a wrong format CD the first 2 tries or something), but I was able to get the 987 with PCM to read an MP3 disk. It is on a 2005 with an April Build Date (I read early 987's with PCM missed the MP3 capability). I only have 99 songs on it, as I read somewhere if you go over 99 songs in a folder, it may not recognize the disk. Maybe you had over 99 songs, and that is why it did not play the disk.

The PCM display will show folder, so when I have time I am going to try and put several folders on a CD and see what happens. The PCM display will also show the band, album, song, genre. It will also allow an alphabetical sort of the all the bands and songs. Not as conveniant as an IPOD, but a few CDs could certainly hold hundreds of songs.

If only there was a way to get XM in the car, other than the Suncoast Porsche Cayenne PCM retrofit which is probably a $1500 solution. That is what I really want.

I too would like to find a more cost effective solution. I don't even need to have the Ipod powered, I just want a cable that I can plug into a CDR-24 MOST (non-bose, no Navi) head and be able to plug in my Ipod. Doesn't seem like it would be that difficult.

If anyone hears something or knows of something other than a $450 solution, please post. I am going to call Becker on Tuesday after the holiday to see if they have any solutions.

I don't know if the 987 has an external CD changer option, but if it does you might be able to wire a 3.5mm cable in.
