? Bad cat converters

My CEL light came on. Went to shop and they reset it and said the code was saying the catalytic converters were probably going bad. They said $800 each for just the parts, and that there are 2 of them. Anybody with expertise in this area? Sometimes I hear that there are 4 cats. Anyone know how to get them cheaper?

I think on the 01 there is 4 cats.

Depending on which ones they say are going bad you can just bypass them instead of replacing them,

The other thing...is your CEL still on??
If so let us know what the code is and we can try to help.

AutoZone will read your codes for free.

If i bypass them, will I have a problem passing emissions?

If you're showing a CEL it has to be the primary cats, which are integral to the headers. The secondary cats do not have O2 sensors behind them.

I'd look on eBay or call some dismantlers vs buying new headers. This also might be an opportunity to go to a catless header, and relocate your secondary O2s behind your secondary (mid pip) cats.

I believe the factory warranty on the catalytic converters is something like 10 years. Is it the P-dealer who you went to?
