986S Motor Mount

2000 986S with a minor shudder/vibration as the revs pass through 3K (most noticable in second gear).

A quick search reveals that I could have a deteriorated motor mount. One thread said the mount is visable by removing the panel behind the seats. I looked last night and didn't see anything that resembled the pictures of bad motor mounts.

Where do I look? Anyone know of a link to a relevant picture?

Thanks,

Front Motor Mount

is visible from underneath the car after removing the plastic pan. But you can't tell much about it until you get the mount removed.

Mike's right, you can't really inspect the mount.

I just installed a new mount. The part has been updated to a 987 part number. It's much much beefier and more sturdy looking than the stock 986 part, but it doesn't introduce any odd vibrations or noises like the urethaned mounts can. Given how inexpensive the new part is (I think it was $140.14 from Sunset), I can see no reason to not replace it.

What's involved in actually replacing the mount? Is it a DIY project?

I believe it's covered (or linked to) on Mike Focke's web page.

It is not difficult, but it does require some mechanical ability to accomplish safely.

Thanks for all the help so far.

I just checked with my local Porsche dealership (Arlington, VA) and they have a motor mount in stock but it seems the price has gone up. For a stock replacment part they quoted $219. I checked on the Suncoast website and they have it listed for $209 plus shipping.
