Looking for a good drive from DFW
 

Hi everyone,

I am looking to take a day or weekend trip in the near future. I will be coming from the Dallas area. Does anyone have any good suggestions on destinations, scenic routes to take, twisties, or any other good ideas for a little spirited driving?
The drive down to Austin seems a bit straight and boring. (on I-35) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. The PSM will be ON for this trip. ;)

I think you'll need to head west or south west. If you head towards Austin, there are some fantastic roads around Fredricksburg -where they have the annual Boxstoberfest. That drive would probably be better with an overnight stay. But those are the best roads I've ever seen in Texas.

If you're heading toward Austin, check the roads to Bandara, these are some of the twistiest and most scenic in that part of the state - the Hill Country.

You could always go east (I-20) toward Tyler - Texarkana. Not exceptionally twisty, but very scenic. Head south on St. Hwy. 42 to Kilgore and stop at the Country Tavern - Best Ribs and Brisket in TX, at least it's Geo. Bush the 1st's favorite.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! The weather was perfect this past weekend, so my wife and I went with Lil bastard's suggestion and went for some good ol' Texas barbecue! Here's some pics and a vid from the trip. We had a blast! :D There is nothing like the feeling of driving a Boxster. Her confidence, poise, and refinement are undeniable. Tell us where to go next!!!

This would be a good drive for you. Its on one of the top ten drives list.

Or just explore on your own, really nice town.

Wow! Kewl! I never thought you'd do it!

The Country Tavern is a great place and I'm glad you had a good time + there are some areas you can really air out the Boxster (even though you let the 'Vette get past you - lol). I gotta get back down there for their ribs, plus, my Country Tavern 'T' shirt is starting to show it's age.

BTW, for all the Whiskey Bay and NOLA ppl., they also have a place in Shreveport, LA, well worth the trip.

If you really like BBQ, Country Tavern is the best in TX, but the best in the world is a small place called the Pig Pit in Caddo Valley, AR (everything is smoked over a Hickory Fire Pit which was lit back in 1954 and kept going ever since). I know OTR Truckers who'll go 100 mi. out of their way to hit the Pig Pit, and I once-a-year have several lbs. of their meats FedEx'd to my home for a Super Bowl party - every year since 1997. Take I-30 out of Dallas east to Caddo Valley, AR (exit 78) .5 mi. south to the Pig Pit.

Then, once full of great BBQ (don't forget to keep room for their Fried Fruit Pies), take AR St. Hwy 7 out of Caddo Valley into Hot Springs - some of the twistiest, most scenic roads in the US - always a lot going on there - the only inner-city National Park in the US - the sidewalk is actually HOT (can't walk barefoot) from magma running so close to the surface.

That sounds like a blast! Damn all the talk about BBQ is making me hungry..

I sure wanted to, but there just aren't any really good ribs up here. Their idea is some pitifully cooked meat smothered in sticky sweet BBQ sauce. To get good ribs here, you have to have the Butcher cut them special and do them yourself, slowly, on the grill and that's not yet in season here. :(

When I lived in Chitown, we always went to Clarks Ribs for both sitdown and take-out - those were some good ribs - are they still around? (s/b Carson's Ribs which was on Wells St. - thnx Nick for the PM correction - amazing what you forget after being away so many years)

Country Tavern is just the best I ever had in TX, and their walls are lined with pics of celebrity clientele - most every Dallas Cowboy, TX Gov., several presidents and such. It ain't fancy, just a big steel shack, but it sure is good.

Picking the best ribs in TX is a difficult task, there's LOTS of stiff competition. But the Country Tavern has been doin' ribs since 1939.

A bad rib joint in TX just isn't gonna last that long, especially in a small out-of-the-way town like Kilgore. :cheers:
