How many miles are you guys getting out of your clutch?
 

Dealer said 40k or so is average but that seems low to me. I will need one before 80k on a 6sp. What kind of miles are you guys getting out of your clutch and is your car a 5 or 6sp? I wonder if the average is the same for both trannys or if one is harder on the clutch than another.

I went 120k on my 1st clutch, i have a 5 speed.

Clutch life varies by a very wide degree on any car. Just like brake life and tire life it completely depends on driving habbits. It's pretty irresponsible (or dishonest) for your dealer to give you a number at all.

I got 50K on mine, and both the clutch and flywheel were toast at that time. I am the third owner and the car had 43K on it when I got it.

As was said, clutch life depends on the driver, and car. But I have routinely gotten over 100k miles on clutches over the years before slipping ocurred.

Bob Z - Is that 100k on Boxster clutches? If so, what tranny was that? If clutches in general, yes of course it can vary and I have had up to 150k on a clutch (saab).

Edevlin - Is that the 6sp or 5sp? Thanks! Edit: Just noticed on your signature line that it's a 5 sp. so another good data point. :)

Blue2000s - I disagree about the dealer being dishonest. I asked him how long do the clutches last and he told me what he has been seeing on average. He said some were shot at 15k and some much longer than that 40k average due to driving habits, etc. Incidentally, he said the 15k one(s) were due to people using the clutch friction point to hold the car when starting on hills which is a good lesson for all of us to use the ebrake! ;)

Then that's different from what you initially stated. You made it sound like the dealer was telling you that the clutch would need to be replaced at 40,000 miles.

If he's just "shooting the ********************" with you, then it's not to be taken as a guideline at all.

Average clutch wear may be 40,000 miles (but it probably isn't), but if the range is 15-150k, it's basically useless information.

I have 77k on my car and clutch, and there isn't the slightest hint of slipping. This is a 5sp, by the way.

Like others said, clutch life is more about driving style (and understanding manual transmissions) than anything else.

I also have 77k on the original clutch in my 6 speed. No signs of problems.

mine went at around 38k miles
(6-speed)

I replaced my original clutch at 25k only because they dealer was doing the RMS under warranty and I wouldn't have to pay for the labor to replace the clutch.

Right now the car is at 55k miles with not signs of clutch wear.

2001 5spd.

i'm at 127k on my original clutch. it doesn't slip yet, but the pedal engagement point is getting pretty high. i'm replacing the clutch next weekend; we'll see how it looks.....

replaced my clutch at 43000. i bought it with 38000. BTW 6 speed

I bought my car with 60k on it, and I believe it had the original clutch. Last week the car turned 100K. The clutch engagement feels the same as when I bought it. It's a 6sp, 2000 986S.

I only have 13k miles on mine (original) and will likely outlast me. I have witnessed new P-Cars go through a clutch in a weekend due to the drivers inability to master the manual transmision. Therefore, as earlier stated, it will last as long as the driver's technic allows it to.
