Drive by wire?

Okay, I've had my 01 base for about a year and a half. My wife has had her 02 S for about 8 months....what does "Drive by wire" mean?

a.k.a e-gas. there is no direct connection (i.e. cable) from the accelerator peddle to the throttle.
