Do I need to change the exhaust manafold bolts with new headers?
The subject says it all. Getting the bolt seems to be troublesome unless I want to wait two weeks for delivery.
Thanks Chris |
Nope you shouldnt need to replace the manifold bolts, only the gaskets.

You should get under there and take a look at your headers and the bolts. When I replaced my headers I also replaced the bolts because they were rusted pretty bad. With any luck yours might be in better shape.
The OEM bolts are M8x1.25x28 which is not a readily available size. The 28 is the length in millimeters. The eBay headers I bought had a thicker flange than the stock ones so I went to an auto parts store and bought 12 M8x1.25x30 bolts for about a dollar each. The local Porsche dealer wanted $3 each. If you are replacing your headers in the near future, good luck. I had a hell of a time getting the header/catalytic converter flange bolts off. The rusted header bolts turned out to be the easy part. Regards, mike |
You guys are the best, thanks. I bought the exhaust and headers from Maxspeed Motorsports so maybe the longer bolts will be needed. I took a look and they are pretty rusted so I'm going to have to replace those along with any other rusted bolts.
I should supply the neighborhood with earplugs for the amount of cursing that will go on while I fight with it. :D  Chirs |
Spray the bolts liberally with some of that stuff in a can that loosens rusty bolts up so well and let it sit overnight before you tackle it. That's what my mechanic did on my car when he did a header replacement.
Sorry, but I can't remember the name of the stuff for the life of me right now! |
