Programming key transmitter

I searched the threads but didn't find exactly the answer I need. My spare key is missing the transmitter. The chip is there and the key opens and locks with the door key and starts the car fine...it is just missing the remote transmitter guts. Since I have the right chip and blade, can I buy the same model key off someone else and just use the transmitter from the other key and put it into mine?

I read where the transmitter can be programmed by starting the car then taking the key out and using the transmitter within 6 seconds. Is this correct and can I make this work? Trying to avoid spending $300 at the dealer here.

Thanks!

If you don't get a solid educated reply on this one, you can PM "Toolpants". Jeff knows absolutely everything about our cars and he's probably tackled this one already.

Not exactly what you asked. http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14296

I take it, for some reason, you are missing the circuit board inside the remote.

That circuit board is coded to a specific car. That is why my remote will not work on your car.

A new remote comes with a 24 digit code on a paper tag. If you were to buy a used remote then you would need the tag that goes to that remote.

On the Boxster you cannot program a remote without a PST2/PIWIS AND the tag for that remote.
