Mintex brake pads
 

I was going to order the Mintex pads on Pelican parts. However, it doesn't indicate if they are the "red box" pads or not. Does anyone know if they are?

No, I don't know.
However, if you value lack of dust more than stopping power, these are great pads.
If you want your car to stop well, these are not the pads for you. Using them on my A4 on a road course made them fade BADLY....to the point I have 12" flames coming out of my front wheels at the end of the straight. Not good for performance driving. Not anywhere NEAR good.

Here are the part numbers from Pelican parts for Mintex (red box) for Boxster / S (1997-2004).

Pelican part number: 986-351-939-15-M168 (Front)

Pelican part number: 996-352-939-03-M168 (Rear)

Hope this helps you out. Just double check the rear part number --don't know if the "996" is specific for the 996 or it's just their part number.

I called this morning, and the rep told me that they were not the red box.

Pat - I had heard that the red box were good pads. I am not running the car on a track or anything. I was just looking for a good pad that produces less dust than OEM and still had holes for the sensors.

If you're mainly concerned with wear sensors and low dust, these are the pads for you.
I have different priorities, so I personally stay far, far away from the Reds.

I think there may have been a misunderstanding or the box color has changed. Anyway, it should not make a difference what color the box / packaging is as long as you request for the street application pads. From my recollection (although it looks like my memory may need a kick start :( ) Mintex only makes two types of pads....unless they have come up with a new one since last year that I don't know about w/c is possible. Nevertheless, they are black, as shown in the pic and one of them are semi-metallic (street pads). The second is a racing pad that is blue / black in color but those are metallic and come in a blue box. Anyway, the info that I gave you are the correct ones for the street application.

In my opinion these are the best pads for the money. EBC Red or Yellow.

These work with them and should not interfere with them at all. They are an O.E.M. fit. and reuse the existing sensors. No need to replace them unless yours go bad.

The color of the box/packaging is not important as long as you get the semi-metallic ones for street application. I think the old packaging came in red box. Hence, everyone called it the "red box mintex". EBC and other main brands are good too. There is no need to replace the wear sensor unless your brake light sensor has come on. You may also want to get new shims but you can use the old ones if you like but again you may have to superglue the old shims to the new pads and use a mallet to flatten the old shims.

Thanks guys. What I meant about the wear sensors was "Do these pads come drilled for the wear sensors".

Yes, the Mintex (semi-metallic) pads I got come with holes for the wear sensor. I heard some racing pads don't come with those sensor holes. You should be fine.

I bought these Mintex pads off ebay 2 years ago. Never was able to figure out what this "red box" thing meant. Dont know if these are the red box pads. Anyway, they did not have the holes for the sensors so I drilled them.

Yup--did the same thing....drilled those holes. IMHO, for the price, they have been decent pads for me so far. BTW, do you still use the Mintex brand or have you found something else that works better for you??

Flames!!! You had flames coming from your brake pads??? I have never seen that at a DE or track day. Sounds like something was really really wrong, undersized, mismatched etc.

The Mintex front pads are still in. Should say they are front pads for a 2.5. Friction ratings are EE which is a bit lower than the factory FF. I have noticed no difference between the Mintex and the factory Galfer pads.

And I still do not know what "red box" pads are supposed to be.

Do you prefer Mentex over Pagid?
