Wow, you're even confusing me with your confusion... Don't over think this. With the new setup quite simply there are two sets of headers, one for each side of the engine. Each one has a single bung for an O2 sensor before the cats. That's all. So the driver's side and passenger's side both have one O2 sensor. This is the same as the European setup where there is only one cat on each side and the O2 sensor is before that cat.

With the old/stock setup there is an O2 sensor before and after the first set of cats. Both sensors are mounted on bungs in the header. When he put his new headers on he just kept the first (front/forward most) sensor from each side. The rear, after cat, sensor was simply unplugged on each side.
