Turbo or GT3, what do you prefer?
Just curious.

No GT2 on the list?

gt3 rs,all the way.......get that awd stuff out of here.

It depends. I have (rich) friends who have both a 996 GT3 and a 997 Turbo. They are almost chalk and cheese. If you want a car that is stupid fast, ok on the road and awesome on the track get the GT3. If you want a car that is stupid fast, awesome on the road and ok on the track get the Turbo. On a twisty track I can outrun the turbo, on a track with long straights he will eat me alive. GT3 kicks my a$$ whatever the track :)

Hey Jeph, fun question! :)
I was torn between the only convertible choice (Turbo Cab.) but then sided with the GT3 RS because then I could get my orange Porsche. |
Top Gear says the 997 GT3 is much more usable on a daily basis than the previous 996 GT3. I think I lean towards the GT3 vs the RS, and I'm not sure why. It might be because I don't track HARD CORE, so that roll cage is of no real use to me. Nor is the even LESS weight.

This is a question I always ask myself.
In my world a year ago I would have said the GT3 but today I would buy the TT. Why? A 3 year old daughter who loves the Boxster and would rather leave mom at home than ride in the X5. With the TT we can all go together. So yes in my house a TT would be the family car. |
GT3 for me.....
Ed  |
Another vote for GT3 RS! Orange is cool but I really like the green
|
I voted for the GT3 based soley on the fact that I would one day like its bumper on the front of my Boxster.
Truthfully, if I had the money I'd buy an Italian with the engine in the proper place. |

So something like this Mike? http://www.webalice.it/vkanna/motori70/imagepages/image72.htm |
The Turbo in my opinion is a much better daily driver than the GT3. I mainly drive my car most days and the GT3 would shake the colon too much!
All wheel drive and nicely appointed full leather interior with a sunroof and Bose system is much more of a creature comfort mobile!! |
Turbo cab!
I work too much too appreciate the benefits of the suspension in the GT3 Im all about the looks!!!! |
I would 'prefer' to drive a GT3, I always like naturally aspirated better than Turbo. Like the look better too.
But..... if I were to buy one right now I would go Turbo b/c it has a backseat and I could bring the kids along. |
Having driven all the above at speed on racetracks as a PCA instructor, there is no comparison. GT3RS wins hands down. Closest you can get to a real GT3RSR and worth every penny.

OR http://www.worldofstock.com/slides/TRC2946.jpg I'll take the green one |
GT3 RS all the way!!! The sicker, the better!!!!! Love the crazy colors!!!!
|
I've heard the Turbo-Cab being described as the 'Ultimate 4wd". Really a great car for four seasons - with back seats and crazy versatility. Not to mention it does 0 - 60 in 3.8 seconds (with Tip). I seem to be in the minority, but it has my vote!
|
GT3 for me. I am a bit of a track hound but I don't want a car that will knock my fillings loose on a Sunday drive in the mountains (RS). This is a lot of car and many who own them only scratch the surface of their true performance. Once in a while someone who really knows how to use it will turn some laps... and Whew!
The Turbo is just too much car for me. Too heavy, don't need 4wd, will never ever see 200mph in it, back seats are useless for anyone over 35lbs, and my little 2.5 Box already runs circles around them at the local track. If I lived in central Germany with the Autobahn in my backyard I might feel differently. |
Well guys, at todays Porsche drive having a Boxster TT paid off. The guy with the 600 hp 996 TT wanted to drive my car so he drove mine and I drove his, after we got back a 07 GT3 wanted a turn.
After driving the modded 02 996 TT and the stock 997 GT3 with only 2k miles. I would put my money in the 996TT. The TT pulled from 2000rpm and was faster than I ever felt, the GT3 felt lack luster until 5000rpm compared to the TT. On a curvey road the GT3 may be better, on the track the GT3 may better, but for my money the TT seemed near perfect. I do alot if interstate driving and the backroads still would have the Boxster. Now the disclosure, I only drove about 10 miles in each car. |
GT3 RS for me, no substitute- at least in my opinion :)
|
I would take the turbo just for the fact of every day enjoyability...sure the gt3rs is a bamf car but i think the stiffer suspension and such would eventually get on my nerves .. i vote turbo :D
|
Straight out answer: GT3
BUT for the cash, I'd say build a GT3 Boxster - 986S with GT3 motor, seats, PCCB's, sway bars, and PSS9's. I really can't believe that nobody's done this yet. |
Was at the dealership a while back and they had a Kermit green gt3 RS. Salesman said "Push in the clutch!" :D
That thing was as hard as a rock! Very heavy. Maybe on the go it would get lighter, but for every day, it just didn't feal right. Jason |
IMO, the GT3 is a more purpose built Track car while the Turbo is more streetable in most situations. So, I think your intended use should have a lot to do with your decision.
I'd chose the Coupe' over the Cab because unlike the Boxster, the Cab lacks some of the rigidity of the Coupe. |

The motor will bolt right in with a little creativity. Tholyoak has done this already. |
For some reason I think the turbo engine and the GT3 engine are a different design than the standard 3.4l or 3.6l, and because of that they will not fit into a Boxster.
I have been wrong before so it would not surprise me if I am wrong this time. |
