Worn Leather Seat
My 99 boxster's driver's side seat is wearing out - no doubt from my large arse sliding into the car - and I need to either get the thing reupholstered or move to seat covers. Does anyone have any ideas on how to address this issue? I have looked at salvaged seats, but they are running $1,500 pr. I would love to find a less expensive alternative that still looks good.
Thanks! |

I had this problem on my Infiniti G20 and Miata and I'm sure I will eventually encounter ii on the Boxster. I think there are three options:
1. You can have the leather repaired and recolored. There are people who specialize in this work. Most of their business is with car dealerships reconditioning used cars. So you might call a few high-end dealers and find out who they use. 2. Take the car to an auto upholstery shop. They can sew in new leather panels. 3. Buy a complete cover. GAHH sells a set: http://www.gahhinc.com/convertibletops27_57_341_3005/leathercarseats1203/product_info.html I've never used them, but perhaps someone on the forum has. On my Infiniti I used option 1 because the driver seat just needed minor repair. On my Miata I went with option 3. |
Depending on how bad the damage is, pictures would help. But I just use some black leather shoe polish stain filler. You know, the kind that is used to cover up shoe scuff marks. It works great and you can't even tell the difference. Unless you have rips or tares in it.

GAHH leather covers are the best

I have an old seat back leather I'd be willing to sell you for $35. It's the passenger side, so it's in better shape than my driver's side was in. Not perfect by any means, but you can take yours off and put this one on and bada bing, no torn leather for cheap.
Now if yours is just worn to the point that the black is off of it, you can get leather dye and fix that or give the shoe polish a try. However, if you've worn straight through the shiney part of the leather into the "suede" backing, swapping the cover out might be good. BTW, mine is black leather. |
Damn dude too bad you didn't post last night.....a set of electric 996 seats sold for $155........
just keep an eye out on ebay and you will get some for a good price. |
I went the seat cover route to keep my seats from getting worn anymore than they already are. The sheepskin is great, and I have no complaints.
But you could also buy an new leather cover and replace the leather without replacing the seat. :D |

Thanks!
Thanks to all for you help with this issue. Since the leather on my seat is work completely through, I will be keeping my eyes peeled on e-bay for a reasonable replacement. Thanks again!

I have GT3 seats in now and NEED to get rid of mine. They are in very good quality though. How does 500 sound for 2 seats in really good shape? |
Got mine from GAHH
Just bought the bottom piece and installed it myself.
