Transmission; 2nd & 3rd grind only, complete rebuild necessary??.

Hi, my 99 5spd gearbox seems fin and solid as does the clutch (pretty low miles), 2nd gear grinds up and down & requires DBL clutching always. 3rd grinds to a much less extent. First I don’t care about.

Everything else is fine, no howling and the like. Pretty darn low milage. Is it possible to remedy this without a complete rebuild?

Can it be done by just removing the gearbox (instead of complete transaxle)?

DIY ? (pretty experienced amateur, lots of motors…complete renovations)???

Thanks, PK

P.S. Any peephole to see the wear opn the clutch

I read that it's 20 hours labor to take a 6-spd tranny apart.....that's just labor who knows what parts and additional labor will cost once they find the problem. Taking the tranny out and swapping it with another should only cost(labor only) around $600-$1k MAX for a straight swap. That may be the more cost effective route.

If this is the case you might want to consider keeping an eye out on eBay for a used tranny. They go for $1-2.5k used with low mileage. It's not worth taking it apart and finding the problem,it could be dragged out way longer than it's worth $$$$ wise.

Good Luck.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply;

It’s a 5 speed not 6. I was under the impression that it was just a question of a few sychro parts.

My hesitation with used motors and transmissions is that you really have no Idea of the mileage. In addition, my trans went from a little annoying to impossible (except by dbl. clutching to the max) in 4 or 5k. Seems they can go down hill quick (no?).

Anyway, I haven’t seem on for less than $2500, which is the low end at my shop.

More thoughts are welcome….

Regards, PK

How many miles are on the tranny that's acting up now?

Hmm, Thanks for doing my homework; ya think LA auto is to be trusted on the mileage? How many miles should these boxes are good for?
