Temp gauge flashing

I was driving this afternoon and my temp gauge started flashing. My car wasn't at operating temp yet so the car wasn't over heating. Any idea of what could be wrong?

Check for leaks of the cooling system tank and pump. The flashing light indicate low coolant.

Flashing temp light may also indicate a bad radiator fan motor (burning elect. smell??). After checking your coolant level, warm the car up an check to make sure they are all working.

i noticed the same thing over the weekend but only at nite when it was about 45 degrees out and engine temperature needle was under 100. i stoped and restarted the car and flashing light was gone. so far it happened twice and only when engine was cold. no smell of burning.
