That's about right. That price is crazy! Just goes to show you that they are over priced on very thing, not just the hardtop.

$750-$800.00

rebeltown 11-01-2007 04:21 PM

I agree with most listers here... Price would have to be VERY good!

djomlas 11-01-2007 07:59 PM

yeah right, people want their hardtop for the price they are asking for a spoiler, not gonna happen

If I remember correct with this hardtop the trunklid is removed. To me the top is beautiful on our cars but not having the ability to just pop it on and off is a negative.

rick3000 11-02-2007 03:35 PM

If they drop the price to $800 I'm in, but unless it is that low (and I think others will agree) I am happy with my factory top. It can be removed anywhere at any time in about 5 minutes.
Hell, I removed it at my roadtrip destination in Lake Tahoe, and drove around the lake, then put in back on for the ride back home (8 hours).

If you want a Cayman, which this top will make your car look like permanently. For 5K more than a new Boxster and this top, you can just buy a Cayman. Plus, I think the zientops only fit the 987.

Just my $0.02.

The Zeintop fits the 986, look at the pictures, it's pictured on a 986.

I will be ordering one around the first of next year.

email sent -- I'm interested to know more.

I am concerned (like most) about the cost of the top. I think I am more realistic than some about what the final cost will be. I have some questions about the design/engineering of the product. Does any member own this hardtop?

Some questions:
- How quiet is it?
- Rattles?
- Wind-noise?
- How is visibility? Any blind spots? Is it better or worse than having the rag-top up?
- Does the slope of the rear window require a wiper when it rains?
- How effective is the defroster on the rear window?

And, by far, my biggest concern:
- Does the design of the top potentially expose the exterior paint to damage? Either by poor fit -- OR -- by tempting the owner to try to "use" the interior space created by the hatchback.

I'd like some user feedback on the above prior to making the investment in this top.

I do appreciate Chris' efforts to organize this.

Also, what is the timeframe for a decision/feedback?

$2k would be a really good price for most. If enough of us are in maybe..

rick3000 11-10-2007 03:52 PM

Realistically, I doubt they would drop the price below the cost of the factory hardtop. They sell for 6.5k, I don't think they will drop the price by 35+ %.

@ fatmike, the zientop has wider b-pillars than the factory top, so it could affect visibility.

Could go lower with time

I would love to pay around 3k to $3,500. I am in if we can get a bulk order together or maybe they will eventually lower the cost when they figure out how to lower manufacturing costs.

time could provide for a lower price.
who knows

After careful consideration have decided that, unless the price came down A LOT (read: an unrealistic amount), I've got too many other things that I need to spend my bucks on.

Barring a miracle deal, I'm out.

dmcummins 11-16-2007 04:53 AM

Like the rest, I am interested, but it depends on price.

rebeltown 01-03-2008 01:01 AM

Any word on a group buy between us and the Renntech group? I am going to buy soon but would like a good deal before spending more than I have to...

ichiro75 01-03-2008 04:48 AM

Count me in if the price drops to around 3K.

mts 01-03-2008 06:00 AM

I would be interested.

Chris_Craft 01-03-2008 09:10 AM

Hi Guys. Latest info was if a bulk order of 5-10 units could be placed then a 8-10% discount may be considered. From the feedback i got at the time it did not seem to be enough for most interested members to commit.

Even at $4500US I think there will be very limited demand for this top. It's primary use is for winter driving. At the current price you can drive a very nice used car in the winter for that price, particularly if you need to put winter tires on the Boxster which makes winter driving even more expensive. Unless you are limited to one car for other reasons it seems many people would just drive another car in the winter. If you're going to drive the Boxster in a northern climate in the winter and want a hard top it's also less than half the cost to put a Porsche top on. It just is a lot to pay it seems.

Dohertycm 01-03-2008 11:29 AM

price comparison

If I can pick up a hard top for my 986 for 1200 to 1500 dollars, i would certainly purchase one of these tops for $3500....with out delay. But the current price of 5 grand is a little pricey, even though it looks nice.

I know that doesnt make sense. But in my mind that is what I would pay for this top.

Get a commitment for 20 at 3500, see if they bite
