Had an IMS Failure?

This is a quick poll of forum members.

My vote is for my neighbor's 04. She is not a member on the forum.

I have an 2004 2.7... what mileage did hers happen around? Just got my car back from a RMS leak, and while it was in there I had a clutch disc put in...tech said it only had about 1-2k left on it Mine was done @ 30k...I don't know how the previous owner drove :o

Brucelee 09-28-2007 06:59 AM

11K miles I believe

Sorry for my ignorance here, but what is IMS?

dmcutter 09-28-2007 08:42 AM

Had mine in for the 15k service week before last and asked them to check the RMS (which I knew was in fact leaking). They replaced the RMS under warranty and also fixed an IMS leak. So it hadn't failed, but I guess might have been on the way there.

Intermediate Shaft Failure. total engine melt down.

Dr. Kill 09-28-2007 10:11 AM

Thanks - am thankful I haven't had to learn yet what that meant.

To those very unfortunate souls who have had IMS failure or know somebody who had one, can you please post the following details:

-Corrective action taken
-Cost
-If out of warranty, successful PCNA support (Y/N, magnitude)
-Year
-Mileage
-2.5, 2.7, 3.2, 3.4, etc
-A sad venting story

It would be great if there was a way to change your vote if you get IMS failure in the future. Still, This is a good poll to have!

JCL12 09-28-2007 06:13 PM

We should periodally open the poll and see what happens!

I wonder . . .

If the IMS issue is a type of systemic flaw that will eventually cause all boxsters to die. . . .

Or if the IMS failure will only affect a small % of M96 derived engines, regardless of lifespan. I just can't beleive that porsche (after all these years) has still failed to find the root cause of the failure and correct the problem. Same goes with the RMS - I assume 987's still leakey?

:(

Hi, Also are there any preventative measures that can be taken to avoid these 2 types of Failures.
The occurrence of these failures over a 10 year period is just unbelievable to me.

Brucelee 09-29-2007 06:36 AM

Minn Jim knows more about this than I do and has posted before so that you can do a search for the details.

In short,

We don't believe the design issue is resolved as there have been post 05 Boxes with IMS. Also, there is nothing that you can do to prevent this as the issue is design, not use.

I think this is correct.

Guys
Check this site out for the cure to IMS issue these guys have really got it sorted http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines/water_cooled/shaft_tech.

It appears that their fix pertains to the oil leak part of the problem. Oil leaks are one thing, that can be fixed (may not be cheap, but can be fixed). IMS failure will leave you a very heavy paperweight of an engine. It is my understanding that the previous (before 01) ran on a double bearing, and almost none of these fail. The 01 and newer run in a single bearing, and these are the motors that may fail. Last I knew there really was no cure for this, but it does seem that the motors that are predisposed to failure do so relatively early in life.
