Rear plastic glass/windshield
Has anybody ever had the rear plastic windshield replaced (w/out replacing the entire roof)? And if so, how much it should cost? Like an idiot I took the car thru an auto carwash and the wear and tear cause by inclement weather has caused dimples and scratches on the plastic. Thanks!

Auto upholsterer can do it, it is eisenglas...
At least that is what was used years ago, never wash eisenglas with windex or any ammonia product, or it will get it milky... |
dimples will almost always come out with time.
scratches on the plastic can be fixed with multiple applications of the Porsche rear window cleaner (or similar product). It seems to work best to spend 5-10 minutes on cleaning it - then out your rags down and try again another day. Over time it gets better. |
I took mine to a local convertible top place to have a new window put in. They had to remove the whole top because the new window had to be sewn in. They charged me $250 and told me next time it would be $500 because they under estimated the labor involved. By the way the did a beautiful job on my 2000 Boxster.

try cleaner/polish first
before you go through the time and expense of replacing the window you may want to invest about 7 bucks each on the meguiar's mirror plastic cleaner and polish. you use the cleaner first and it will probably take several runs to get it as smooth and clean as possible. then the polish coat to bring out the translucence. i bought a used 98 with a half weathered rear window and now it looks almost like new. i wouldn't have believed it if i hadn't done it myself.
got the mequiar's at a marine supply store. for 14 bucks it's worth the try. |
