Ontario new law on drivers caught exceeding speed limit by 50 km/h!

http://www.thestar.com/News/article/246448

I realize this is only for public saftey but in my opinion, people traveling at those speeds or beyond (especially on the highway!) will may be alittle more tempted to flee rather than stop and perhaps face a $10000 fine and loss of licence! It also makes me wonder can you street race as long as you dont break 50 over the limit?

maybe a better idea would be to raise the speed limits (on highways at least) then put this law in affect. I mean do any of you Ontario drivers actually drive at 100km/h. From my experience the average is 120-140km/h, too bad that will never happen, its whishfull thinking!

That is what happens when you elect a liberal! The Canadian flag turns more red every day!

Recently in my new home state of Virginia they have come out with "civil" fees. One example is 20mph over the limit is something like a $3,000 fine, the first 1/3 due at your court date. No pay.. no license. We mostly call it a "tax" but our governor likes to think it will improve our driving habits and pay for better/more road development. Something tells me, that our speed limits are just too low ;)

/stands on soapbox, begin rant!/

Try Driving in Melbourne!

1. We have a set 3km tollerance!!!!!!!
eg. your doing 64kph in a 60kph (take 3kph off and you are doing 61kph) zone.......$135 fine and 1 demerit point! or 79kph in a 60kph zone......$260 fine and 3 demerit points. You only get upto 12 points in a 3 year period. Rack-up 12 points in that period, good bye license!

2. We have fixed SPEED & RED LIGHT Cameras at every major intersection and most other intersections. All our freeways have fixed cameras, and now timed cameras! (time of travel between two points over distance = velocity)

It is pure revenue raising for the government, it's got nothing to do with safety when they ping you at 3kph over the limit........ but I do agree with tougher panalties for street racers!

Oh, and forgot to mention.....we drive on the wrong side here! :p

/rant over/ :D

If the government implements this type of program, they should expect a reaction, whether it is new radar devices, drivers running from the police, etc. . The fine will drive some pretty strong behavior I believe.

:)

How long will it be until GPS devices are part of every car?

I can see a day when your bank account is automatically charged by your car every time you violate any traffic "law". Consider how many times you don't come to a complete stop at stop signs....

I started this thread to warn ontario drivers... laws only been in effect a few weeks, Let me just tell you they are not messing around last weekend my sister got impounded for exactly 150km/h in an 100 almost $1000 impound fees and we have to wait and see what the court determines but from everything ive read she will be getting the minimum $2000 fine or more.
as for me V1 is now permantly affixed to my window and the blinder extreme laser jammer is on its way as we speak my car is not going to be the next victim of this "police state" law

That is the problem with the socialist state mentality. If the government sells you on the concept that they, and only they are there to protect you and take care of you, it becomes a very slippery slope.

If "speeding" is bad, then the government gets to decide what constitutes speeding and what "stick" they will use to make us all behave.

Easy to justify, it is all to protect US, right?

Now, of course, obesity is BAD for us, so what do you think is coming down the pike. Smoking is BAD and the restrictions will soon be in your home, not in our office. And, of course, the tax on "fatty foods" will follow the tax on tobacco.

Now, don't get me wrong, I hate street speeding. However, as I said above, what constitutes speeding gets worked to the government coufers angle every time.

God bless us all, everyone.

:D

Save your money.. check out the episode of mythbusters where they show how every one of these (inluding the spray) does not work.

Tubonator anyone?

I think we also need to consider that it is our insurance rates that are escalating due to the losers who smoke, don't exercise and drive recklessly. We pay for their poor choices in life in more ways than one.

Your insurates rate are rising due to corporate greed-not losers who smoke, do drugs, drink etc. I would aggree these people contribute to the overall cost of health care cost you need to look at the corporate earnings of these companies. I remember seeing sonmething not that long ago that showed many of the insurance companies, especially health insurance companies have had quarters (and entire years) where earings were up 1000%. That's right ONE THOUSAND PERCENT. Insurance companies are some of the most profitable firms in the world. I think I am gonna give up my crack corner and go where the REAL money is. United Health Care.....

Classic socialist thinking, but shortsighted. Insurance is my industry. Most of us would LOVE to add more differentiation in the rating systems to allow the "losers" to be charged more for their bad behavior.

Good luck with that. Try getting most of these rating schemes through the insurance commisioner. The losers come out in droves and whine as to how they are being singled out, profiled, redlined, and othewise being picked on. The upper class liberals agree, citing how it is "unfair" to charge someone more simply because they are obese, drive fast, smoke, live in a crummy neighborhood.

We should ALL subsidize those folks so that things are more FAIR.

So, the insurance commisioner says, hey, no fair, you can't charge that guy more because he is ruining his health!

And on and on it goes.

If you want to point the finger, look at how the system actually works. :D

Nice try but no cigar. The health insurance industries profits are not that high.

For example, Wellpoint made about 3 billion on 56 billion in revenue in 2006. Do the math.

Where is the greed there? How much should they make, how do you know.
