Check engine light question???

Got my first check engine light on my car.... fyi...car is 97 with 43k on it... don't remember doing anything except putting the stock muffler back on over the weekend.. how do i check what's wrong without going to the dealer and paying for a diagnosis...thanks.

For starters, you need someone/someplace with an OBDII reader. Basic ones can likely be found online. Genuine Porsche one is too much $$$ for someone other than a dealer or sucessful independant shop. A generic can get you going in the right direction of what has failed.

Once a code is read, it can be diagnosed. There are seemingly 100's of codes that can be tripped that cause the Check Engine Light to come on. Some are minor. Some are major, but you need the code and diagnosis to then fix the problem.

Many auto parts shops

Like AutoZone will loan you a reader. You plug it in and read the codes and record them, then come back and ask what they mean.

you'll have to give autozone 163 bucks in deposit and when you return it they pay you back with cash.

do you guys think it could be a leak in the exhaust system from not tightening the clamps enough??

It could possibly be a leak it could also be your gas cap or oil cap arent screwed on tightly enough hard to say autozone will check it for you for free if you have one of there guys plug it in for you I did it about a month ago they were really cool about it.
