Portable GPS Nav System

A friend mentioned to me that Costco.com has the new Magellan 4050 navigation system on sale for $500. After checking around, that looked to me to be by far the best price. It has voice recognition and I gather it can transmit its instructions to your car radio. Its database also includes restaurants by type, coffee vendors, etc.

I think the sale ends this Friday. I couldn't resist and ordered one. I mean, it had been over A MONTH since I'd gotten a new toy for the Boxster. ;)

I just got a Garmin Nuvi 680 and love it. A great site to price shop these types of products (and many more) is www.pricescan.com.

I'm considering in an in dash unit. Pioneer and Kenwood have some nice ones for under a $1000 with flawless Ipod integration.

I picked up a Garmin C330 two weeks ago. From playing with it in the store, I found the interfce very easy to use and it even included maps of Anchorage and the remote parts of Canada. Should be great for my Boxstoberfest road trip later this month.

I probably going to get the mio c220 in the next few weeks. But my freind has the magellan and it is great. Good choice, but I am not willing to spend that much.

Also, has anyone had a problem seeing the screen with the top down, a lot of GPS's have screen problems in direct sunlight?

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 350 for my wife about a month ago. I paid about $350 at Buydig.com. It has worked great on our trip to Boston and we anticipate that it will also work well when go to California. A portable system is nice because you can move it from car to car. This is especially helpful when you are driving a rental car in a new city.

I haven't used it in my Boxster, but I did look at it in direct sunlight when we were walking in Boston. It is harder to see, but while driving I found myself relying on the voice directions with occasional glances at the map for reference.

I made a mount with an extra (purchased online) Garmin car mount. I suction-cup the mount to my Sport Chrono dial. Works great.

i have the mio c310x. around $150 during the holidays and up until recently. also can be convinced to run tomtom software. although i find it indispensable, i wouldn't want to spend much more than that on one of these things.
