New California Boxster Owner * Are euro-style front plates legal?

I want to get a euro-style plate...

Are they legal?
Where do I get one?

djomlas 07-30-2007 06:57 PM

if your state doesn't require a front plate, you can put whatever you want on there. its not illegal

Back2DTM 07-30-2007 07:18 PM

It is illegal in CA

rctboxsters 07-30-2007 09:55 PM

Cops will not give u a ticket just because u don't have a front license plate but if you put those Euro plate on, I'm not sure if you can get away with it.

CJ_Boxster 07-31-2007 06:05 AM

I live in los angeles and i drove around in my 1965 Porsche 912 with a Euro-frontplate and never got any grief from the police about it. You'r fine but dont hold me to that if you get a ticket... cause you never know.

unklekraker 07-31-2007 11:20 AM

I agree with CJ...i got mine on my previous Benz' and never got pulled over coz
of the plate (knocking on the wood) and I already installed one in the replacement of the C230 :)

Hopefully i won't get pulled over on the way home

Two years ago there was a big push by law enforcement here in LA (and it may have been state-wide) to get owners to install the front plates. Two friends were ticketed so i reluctantly put the front plate on my Box. Not sure if it is still being reinforced, tho.

Here in Quebec we don't have any front plate and we can put whatever we want there.

Whatever you want... what about a nude picture of Whoopie Goldburg?... I'd pull you over for that!

I have seen plenty of sports cars without the front plate. I wouldn't worry about it, and if you get pulled over they will probably just give you a warning.

For all you custom Euro plate needs...

None of my ride had/has a front plate :)
I did get a ticket for no front plate. I paid for the fine but I still didn't put the front plate back on.
I am not a fan of euro front plate, though.

I live in Southern California. I don't have a front plate on my Boxster. I have received a fix-it ticket for having the front plate off.

1. They won't pull you over for it.
2. They WILL cite you if they've already pulled you over for something else.
3. They WILL cite you at LAX for it--it's commonly-known that you don't want to head to the airport without a front plate.

Having said that, the fix-it ticket I got for the front plate was from the CHP in orange county. I never fixed it, and it isn't in their system anywhere. Something tells me that fix-it tickets from the CHP aren't tracked, but I can't say for sure.

They do the same thing up here but mainly the CHP guys. Local cops don't really care about it. I've been ticketed before for not having a front plate and tinted front windows. All are fixed it ticket which does not show up in your driving record at all. Few years back, I got a ticket on my Z for having tinted windows. I told the CHP cop that the it would cost more for me to remove the tint so I might as well just pay the fine. He said it's up to me and left. BTW, I'm serious about telling the cop that I have to pay more to remove the tint. At the time, the fix it ticket was only around 60 bucks.

if you're car is parked on public streets, you will get a ticket.

anywhere in california.

so, if you don't often park on the streets, i'd say go for it. if you do park on the streets at all, i'd say not.

Right!! Now I remember they got me at least 4 - 5 times and I paid $75 a piece.

Oh, yes--this happened to a friend of mine down here in San Diego. Parked on the street in front of his girlfriend's apartment, came out to a ticket for his front license plate.

fornowh 07-31-2007 10:09 PM

I've been pull over twice for having euro plates, it said the same thing as my regular plates but they still wrote me a ticket-fixed it ticket. local police it's ok, but it's more on the chp.

No, please do not do that. I feel weird just having thought about the idea.

blueillusion97 07-31-2007 10:48 PM

Yes you can get pulled over for it in CA. My friend had one for over 3 years and one day he god pulled over by a motorcycle cop just because of his plate, i was driving behind him when it happened. He got a fix it ticket so no big deal.
