How does Excellence gather its data?
Is this for cars with average mileage? If so, what is that?
Are these trade ins, private party or dealer sales?

You know, I have no idea how they procure these prices. That's a very good question!

I just skimmed the article and it didn't say anything about how they determined the value. I do think it's from data of sold vehicles collected, and not suggested pricing by someone with a depreciation schedule in hand.

This is a regular feature of this magazine and each year they publish something on the 986 and 996. I'm betting they'll release something on the 987 and 997 soon and I'll post that too when it is published for all the 987 owners here.

13,800 miles might have had something to do with this.

Mine was $31,000 for 2002 986S with 21000mi, thanks for reminding me too. :mad: paid on the high end

$27500 for my '02 s last month with 40k on the clock--and a 100k mile warranty through 2010.

the guy i bought it from was honest and anal though; not the case with a lot of the cheaper cars which were for sale by wholesalers.

I bought mine last year for $21250 with 30k on the clock. Since then it seems like prices for 2000 - 2002 models have softened a bit in this area. I didn't think that private party prices had fallen as low as the Excellence article suggests. That's why I'm curious about their methodology. If they are including data on cars sold at auction by dealers, that may explain some of those lower-end prices.

I haven't seen many low-mileage 2000's advertised for less than $20,000 in Virginia. Of course the selling price is what matters.

By the way Randall, you provided me with a lot of advice on my purchase.

yeah, the other thing to consider is location. most of the clean cars i was looking at were on the west coast. not too many in alabama. while i ended up buying mine elsewhere (south carolina), the difference in travel time/hassle was huge; certainly not worth the $2k that i could have potentially saved.

Folks, there's nothing wrong with paying the high end for a Boxster IF the car is pristine and has very low miles on it.

Maybe they just compile user input and publish it at regular intervals. This method of data collection may have a tendency to skew pricing data towards the lower end for two reasons:

1. The sales data would include just private-party sales and perhaps some trade ins; and
2. People might have a tendency to under-report their purchase prices due to vanity.

Personally, I wouldn't mind paying at the high end of those prices if I got a really nice car, both keys, all the manuals etc. I got a fair deal on my car, but I had to put on two new tires in about a month. So a nice car with no issues at a slightly higher price is worth the cost.

Aren't there 3 keys?
 

I know I got 3 with my used Boxster

there's a fairly in depth thread over on rennlist about bruce anderson and his pricing. most people seem to think that he's started using drugs of late. the 993 crowd went nuts when he posted prices FAR below what could be found on market. people were starting to think they'd somehow get screwed if insurance companies relied on that type of data for diminished value, etc.

My 02S with 38kmiles fell in the middle at 27k :dance:

yes, there are two regular keys and one valet key. The valet key can't open the center console or the glove box on 03-4 models.

I got my 1999 with hardtop and around 30k around 3 years ago for 26k. not great, but not bad either

I actually still feel pretty good about paying the high end for my 2002 S that I bought June 2006 for 35k (including a 3 year extended warranty) with 5k miles on it. I knew I wasn't getting a good deal but I felt I was getting a fair deal. It was (is) in pristine condition and other than the repair of a seal leak (covered under the original warranty still) I haven't had a bit of trouble with it. Unfortunately, I've recently passed 10k miles (meaning I've put as many miles on it in the last year as was put on it in its' first 4 years of existence!) but that is the point isn't it?

Forget about the miles and go for smiles. Drive it!

2001 S bought 18 months ago for 34K.......car had 6,200 miles on it
and was absolutely as new with all books, manuals, service
records (6 dealer oil changes in 6.2k miles!). Dealer replaced
the battery (OEM Porsche) and serviced it before I picked it up.
Came with a Porsche Certified Warranty. It even still smells new.
Original window sticker was 52k+........I couldn't be happier.

This year summer I replaced the tires (like new but 6 years old)
and added the one thing I wanted but it did not have - H.I.D.
headlamp conversion.
