When you sell your 986 would you buy a 987?
For all the 986 owners, would you ever consider a 987? Personally, I wouldn't and would like a Cayman or 997 when I sell my 986.

Im leaning towards a 996 c4 cab or c2 cab or hard top... I miiiiiiiiiiight go for a tiptronic version since i dont autocross as much as i thought i would.

Personally, if I had your 986, I would never sell it. That TT look is fantastic. Since I don't, I will eventually sell my 986 base and buy a 987 (or 988) S!

I wouldn't buy a 987 per se. I would prefer another 911 or another 914. Maybe a Cayman someday.

Been Boxstering for 8 years and the only car back then was the 2.5. My 1997 is getting old. Never liked the 996. Do not care if it is a coupe or cab, still do not like it. Then the tubo came out for model year 2001, but only as a coupe. A Boxstir owner is supposed to upgrade. I told the sales person I have known for 8 years that if a turbo cab came out I would think about it, as a joke. Back then Porsche said they would not come out with a turbo cab. Then, the Porsche did. When the 997/987 came out I did not like the way they they looked. The 986 has a classic look to it that will survive decades, like a 356. I do not like the look of a 987. I like the seats and headlights, but not much else. Plus, the inside looks like a Cayenne. I do not like the looks of the Cayman. But this is a good car for people that like a coupe. 996 owners like it. Us local Boxster owners call it a Boxster coupe. I have been going to the local Elise tech sessions. Talk about a funny looking car. Not a look for everyone. |
So you'd stick to the 1997. I respect that, since im not a hardcore tattoo branded porsche enthusiast, i dont mind going to a 996. Bothers me when have to press the gas alittle harder than i'd like just to pass a car on the freeway.

I don't know that I'll ever have the budget to change. Having said that I went into this wanting a 996. If I traded (realistically, not like GT3 or TT) right now I would like a Cayman S.
I know the 911 series of various years are the flagship line, just fell for the Cayman for some reason?? |

Forget the 911, I'm keeping the boxster and putting in a 996 engine when the time comes. A 911 would be a downgrade compared to a 3.6L boxster in my opinion.

I test drove another Porsche this weekend, C4S. And on the drive home I spotted yet another C4S lease return sitting on import used car lot. Both were imaculate 03 and newer and could be had for under $50K. A C4S is not a very common Porsche so the rate of depreciation isn't as accelerated
But will I sell the BoxsterS for it? NO WAY!!! Ideally I'd like the BoxsterS for warm weather and then switch over to the AWD when the weather drops below 60. as far as trading in for a newer Boxster model, I'm not sure I would do that unless we are talking 3.4 BoxsterS and those are going to lose more value than what I'm comfortable with for the near future.. When the 3.4's come down to "plateua point" so to speak of depreciation I *might* consider parting with my 2000 S. The best move in my opinion is to swap to a very very low mileage 986S that checks out on PPI. Maybe the best sports car experience for the money today. You're definitely getting the most bang for the buck. A lower mileage 986S is as reliable and low maintenance as anything I have ever owned. In order to turn that down you would need to offer me *at least* a 50 HP improvement. Anything less would be different but not tremendously bettter from a driving experience. |

The thing is you can get a a brand new base boxster on lease for $575 - $599 a month. I see these leases in autoweek offered all the time. You could probably get a brand new S for $800 a month or so lease. Thats cheap and with a lease who cares about depreciation. Then in 3 years get another new one :)
Also some companies offer leases on slightly used, maybe you could pickup an 05 S on a lease for $500-$600 a month. |
leasing a car in my opinion makes absolutely no sense. so you pay a car payment every month for so many years but, never own the car. if you alter it in any way you have to return it to stock before giving it back. that's something i would never do.

When I was growing up the 911 was always my dream car. Now I prefer the 986 styling and the mid engine layout. Plus I got a killer deal on mine. I'm going to put a turbo in it and coil overs and keep it forever and always.

I'm always thinking about what I'm going to do next.
One option is to do what Adam is doing, putting a 996 engine in my Box. That would just rock. I've also thought about upgrading. I'd like a C4S, but I'd probably get a coupe next. If I can afford it I really want to pick up a used GT3. I don't know. I've been a Porsche owner for 10 months and I still walk out to the garage just to get a glimpse of my car. I might just keep my Box and spend the money to modify her more and more. In answer to the original post, probably not. I don't see myself going from a 986S to a 987S/988S. |
I would not buy a 987 over my 986. I have put so much into my car it is worth more from a driving experience standpoint than I could ever get for it. I would not see a 987 delivering enough incremental benefit to justify the switch given all the modifications. I am not shy about putting miles on my car as I get behind the wheel every chance I get. I replace trim and other parts as they wear to keep the car looking fresh. If the engine fails I would replace with a 3.4L. The car does have a classic roadster look that will always appeal to me.

I'd consider a C6 Vette. Or swapping a 3.6 engine into my Boxster. Or a '08 BMW M3. Or an RS4. Or a Big Dog K-9.... [snaps out of it]
