I will break it down for you Gerry,
It looked like the 850 had to block the Boxster from passing it. Whether or not the 850 was trying hard the Boxster ended up in front by decent amount of space.
(Gerry,check your PM box.)

Yea maybe the best BMW ever 15 years ago, but no way even comparison with current day M5's/M'6s even the new M3 or a Z8.

For it's time the 850 was awesome. There is no way you can compare the two,one is almost 20 years old now.

It didn't look like the BMW driver was even aware that he was participating in a "race". The video appears to be one of those where driver A records random video of his vehicle passing driver B on a freeway and chalks it up as an internet victory.
While no doubt an 8 series, it's also unclear as to which one. A 986 would be faster than an 840 and about on par with an 850i but would be spanked in a straight line by an 850Csi which does a 5.3 0-60 and a 13.9 quarter. The power difference would be even more dramatic at high speeds as the CSi has a v12 that puts out 372 hp.

I would love an 850...as soon as someone teaches me how to drive an automatic.
I guess if I was in the market for an expensive as hellto maintain GT I'd go with a 928 instead. It has the cooler pop up lights and better resale.

I would say that the 850 wasn't that interested in a race. The Boxster just wouldn't pull away that rapidly if the 850 was into the throttle. The 850 is still a great looking car in my opinion. There is no way that you can compare an 850 to a Boxster. The 850 vs. a 928 would be a good debate though. Both heavy, lots of horsepower, very comfortable, very expensive to maintain. The 928 though handles amazingly well given its weight. I have an unmodified 928 S4 that we autocrossed one day and it wasn't too far behind the Boxster. A number of people drove the 928 that day and all were surprisingly impressed.

To me it looks like they were getting into the throttle and playing around in the beginning then the BMW decided to call it quits.

I owned an 850 for 3 years, it is the best car I ever owned and it was not an automatic.
I actually have been looking for another one as I think it is probaly faster then my '02S and I think it is more comfortable to drive. It is hard to compare cars like a 928 or 850 to a 986 as they were the top of the pile and the 986 is an entry level model so they have a different feel and market segment.
