95 Carrera Repair Input

A buddy of mine has a 95 Carrera. He stores it outside for the winters (not smart but that's a whole different story with this guy). Anyway he jacks it up once a month and rotates the tires a bit to avoid flat spots. This spring he found a puddle of tranny type fluid under the rear of the car (rear axle seal?). He's bringing it to a local small shop for an assessment this week and asked me to post here for any costs estimates or possible diagnosis. Tying to help the guy out - thanks.

PS: this is a guy who does not believe synthetic oil EVER has to be changed despite my begging. He's going on 6 yrs and 50K miles with same filter. He dumps in a fresh quart once in a while. Claims dealer told him that was OK when he got it 2 yrs old. Don't even get me goin on this. Anyway - it speaks well about Porshe engines, the things runs like a top!

Good grief.
It's guys like this that give regular maintenance a bad name.

The usual places for oil leaks on air-cooled 911s are the oil return tubes and the cam covers, neither of which are very expensive to fix. You gotta figure at least $500, though.

I've long wondered if the whole "change your X miles or every X months" is not just a way of selling more oil product. Particularly with syntetic oils and cars that are barely driven like your friend's 10 year old Carrera.
The filter is a different story. Anyone who has ever swapped out an air filter can see that these things get filthy.
