Suspension/Shock rattle question

I have a 97 Boxster, and there is a rattle/sqeeking nosie that occurs when I go over bumps. I was told I needed to put silicone on the bushings as they had dried up. Has anybody ahd a similiar issue and what/how exactly did you do to fix it. (I don't know exactly what the bushings are)
Sorry for my ignorance!

The reference is probably to the sway bar/anti-roll bar bushings. How they would "dry up" I don't know, but they do wear out and need to be replaced.
I would think that silicone or other lubricant is a stop-gap measure, and not a permanet fix.
If that is indeed the problem, replacement of the bushing(s) is probably in order.
