Value of mods.

I decided to write up this info. for your enlightenment. The most of the data comes from Porsche Boxster Story, The Entire Development History, by Paul Frere. June '06 Haynes Publishing , UK.

96-99 2.5 201hp 181 ftlbtorque 0-62 6.6

00-02 2.7 217hp 191 ftlbtorque 0-62 6.6

03-04 2.7 220hp 192 ftlbtorque 0-62 6.4

05- 2.7 240hp 199 ftlbtorque 0-62 6.2

07- 2.7 245hp 207 ftlbtorque 0-62 5.8 Cayman

05- 3.4 295hp 251 ftlbtorque 0-62 5.4 Cayman S

The Cayman info. came from the June '07 copy of Excellence magazine. What makes this interesting is you can line up the modifications you want to make against what Porsche itself has added over the years and see if you are getting bang for your buck. Consider, that it took a jump from 220 hp in '03 to 240 in '05 in order to gain 2 tenths of a second 0-62. Will your new muffler give you a 10 hp gain and the same 2 tenths reduction in speed?

I did not include the Boxster S data for clarity but I could send that if some of you wish. I did not do this in order to discorage anyone from mods. but to set some guidelines of what you will be gaining ...or not... A lighter muffler may help with acceleration for sure as will a lighter battery etc., ad absurdum as you start stripping the car. You can see what the 3.4 does to acceleration. Given that we live in the US where we have no Autobahn where we can go over 100 mph, which Porsches are made to do with reliability, we do not have the torque for stoplight runs but can maintain speed through corners and that is where our advantage lies. Seems like the best mods would be to lighten up the car a bit, and enhance the suspension and tires if you want more out of your base model Boxcars.

how are they the same its impossible? same weight more hp?

2.5 VS. 2.7Ltr. there is your answer.

Allen K. Littlefield 06-28-2007 11:53 AM

Again, this is just raw info. I am passing on. As far as the 2.5 vs 2.7 being 6.6, the change comes from there on out where the 2.7 will pull the 2.5 because of variocam and increased MIDRANGE torque. Other testers would probably have a variation of tenths of a second depending on a lot of factors, temp, tires, weight of driver, etc. The thing is that a stoplight drag is not the Boxcars strong point but extremely good road manners are. If you want more 0-60 performance I recommend a Boxster S or one of the new Cayman S with the 3.4 liter mill. All food for thought not for flame ignition.

Question. What was the first year that the 3.4L. was introduced as the "S" type? And if the 3.4Ltr. is the 05 base model, then what does the "S" model come with? Sounds like it should be 3.2L base and 3.4L for the "S" right?

The 2005-06 Boxster S has a 3.2L engine. The 3.4L didn't make it to the Boxster S until 2007 but was on the Cayman S 2005-2007. So the standard Boxster for 2005-2007 is a 2.7L (I believe). The 3.2L engine produces 280hp versus the 295hp on the 3.4L

"Seems like the best mods would be to lighten up the car a bit, and enhance the suspension and tires if you want more out of your base model Boxcars."

For me the best bang for the buck with mods is suspension first, and then muffler if you want to tune the sound. You may want to leave the rest alone unless you have deep pockets. With my mods I have picked up about 25 hp on the dyno with the chip, intake and exhaust, and with 100 or so lbs of lightening and the coilovers, the car quite responsive and it runs great.

But, would I do all the mods again, probably not, just because of the cost of the mods. They are very expensive if done right, and in my case the cost kinda creeped up on me. Call it a sports car learning experience. But its been fun to do the mods and like most, it gives a great big smile to my face to get behind the wheel...

The early 2.5L cars actually were faster from 0-60 than the 2.7L cars. Reason being the gearing is shorter in the earlier models to help it with acceleration sprints. With the 2.7L introduction, they increased the gearing in the tranny slightly, and thus, a slower 0=60, but better overall midrange feel and higher top end
