Running too rich

Sometimes when I start the car it runs rough and backfires when I give it some gas. This only happens on cold nights. What kind of problem am I dealing with here? My friend tells me it's a cold start problem and my computer need to be adjusted. My engine is chocking on too much gas.

Would this cause, what he is talking about, I thought I read one of your reply's that this part caused [when bad]

Backfire or Excessive smoke [like a blown motor].
