road trip - vegas
 

Hi all, off to vegas for a few days and am looking for any ideas on a side trip or two on some roads that would offer some interesting driving experiences or majestic photo locations, or what roads to avoid; something to keep us out of the casinos for a few hours, gas is still way cheaper than that!!!

The 215 (North Vegas) early mornings is pretty quiet out there!

Can get some speed up and is not populated/built-up (yet), so it's pretty safe?

Lot of road works around the 95 North, and avoid Sahara/Decateur/Jones like the plague always busy (IMHO anyways)

Slow down in Barstow
 

I got a ticket near the Barstow area, over 100mph they could impound your car, jailed and can't clear your driving records with traffic schooling. Downhill road after Zzyzx, no cops watch out for the curves and black ice.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a nice drive. It's just outside Vegas so a short trip to get there. Should keep you out of the casinos for half a day, anyway.
Just be sure the AC is blowing cold before you go.

My son lives in Vegas and he and his family went to a neighborhood park yesterday morning. They lasted 1/2 hr. It was 102 by 9am.

Buy a V1 before you go on that fast and furious trip

i second that. i went to high school in vegas.

my buddy and i once ditched school with a couple of girls and went to red rock. we took them on a hike / climb up onto a bluff for a picnic lunch. the girls got up okay, but they wouldn't climb back down (scared as heck). it took us six hours to scout another path. seriously considered leaving them up there.... :)

Thanks for the tips, have heard of red rock canyon, will give it a run this trip.
So time to hit the road!

Am I too late?
 

It's been a while, but I remember the drive to the Hover Dam was noteworthy (I did it in an NSX with balding tires). The Hover Dam itself is an interesting way to kill time when in the Southern Nevada area.

What! only 35mph! .... Still, Red Rock Cyn, was best part of the trip, was free too!

sorry no photo of it on the flatbed getting towed ($345) (insurance will cover, thank you to my agent for talking me into that!) the last 70 miles to the porsche dealer in vegas from the top of the baker grade... due to the self-destruction ( old and very brittle) of the transmission cooling valve (part no. prc 928 574 573 03)(heater water valve) ($101.22)... $620 total. Gaudin Porsche W. sahara ave. nite drop sorry no loaner!shuttle to hotel and back car ready by 1:00. Lots of nice stuff in their showroom!!
No further problems and it just purred all the way home.

Oh, and vegas kicked my a** again, rats!
