Clear Halogen headlight question...

Hello,

Just a quick question about the clear halogens that are so highly sought after. I know that they were used in 99-01 996's and 2003-04 986's. Are the part numbers for the 996 and the 986 lights the same? Are there any differences at all amongst the clear haloges for the above mentioned years?

The reason I ask is I am fortunate enough to live close to a northern California Porsche dismantler. I called them yeasterday and found out they do occassionally acquire the clear halogens but usually not a matching pair. So my thoughts were to piecemeal a set, acquiring one light at a time. But then I thought that the lights might be somehow different between the 986 and 996 platforms requiring a different part number.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

If you're talking about LA dismantlers, use caution. There prices aren't exactly good in my opinion either. A set of clear/red tails for a Boxster are $150 each USED through them. I can buy both sides at Suncoast for $165 BRAND NEW.

But, yes the 996 clear halogens and 986 clear halogens are exactly the same and should bear the same part number.

If it was Silverstar Recycling use caution with them, their prices are HIGH for recycled parts. Try Mazda Porsche in the Rancho Recycling centers, http://www.mazdaporscheparts.com/ , they are great! I used them once, nice price, the kids(that's right) working the counter knew their stuff as well.

The 2003-2004 Boxster headlights have 986 part numbers. They are not 996 parts.

Under the clear plastic cover 986 headlights have a pattern of lines. On the 996 it is a diamond pattern. Litronic headlights also have this diamond pattern. If I had a 986 and 996 clear headlight in front of me I could tell which is which from the pattern, and of course from the 986 or 996 part number on the back.

Other than the pattern they are the same. The pattern is cosmetic. But I think you would notice if the set was not matched.

I was referring to them, thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know about Mazda-Porsche either, Thanks!

When I spoke with Silverstar, they offered me 100 for my amber tails and 150-200 for my amber headlights cash or credit towards a pair of clear halogens which they sell (when in stock) for 600. Sure beats the hell out of posting them on ebay and the hastle of paypal and shipping. And I haven't seen a pair of halogens on ebay for that price in a while. Most are going for 750-800/pair. The best price I can find for a pair of NEW halogens is Sunset for 1070 + shipping. I have a budget of 500 + whatever I can get for my existing lights to spend.

Well I'm not too sure about that. I sold my old amber halogens for $300+ on eBay. After paying only $480 for my clear halogens then selling my old ones for $300(after Paypal & eBay fees were paid) I ended up only paying something like $175 to upgrade, not bad.

Well after discussing the options with the mrs, we increased my budget to 1k. After looking at Pelican and Sunset, I'm pretty sure I can get a set of brand new halogens for about 1k. So, Am i correct in that I need part numbers 986-631-131-14 and 986-631-132-14? And nothing else is needed, just a direct swap, correct?

Thanks again,

Jeff

Whao! Don't spend $1k on halogens, get a set of used Litronics for $800-$1.1k.

My headlights had 30k on them according to the last owner and they still look brand new. No need to pay 2x the $$$ to say they are new.

Agreed. If you're prepared to spend $1K, go with buying a used set of Litronics/Xenons. I know someone who took his time buying them one side at a time off ebay, and ended up spending $700 for the whole set. They're very coolio...
