Quoted $440 for new front brakes...
This was from a european car mechanic near my work. $440 for new rotors, brakes and sensors. He also offered the cross-drilled rotors for $35 a pair if I wanted. Is this a good price? He said my rear brakes were practically new.

http://www.epiqautosport.com/index.php It's an easy D.I.Y. as long as you have a jack & jack stand. By the way, unless the brake light went off you don't need new sensors. |
I am not sure of the rate for having someone install them, I'll be doing them very soon myself and figure parts for front and rear were around the price as you were quoted for just the fronts installed.
Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=005&sspagename=STRK%3AME WA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=150008917177&rd=1,1 Maybe you could see how much is labor only and you buy the parts. |
I agree with Blink (robert)...

The price is reasonable but it is a DIY job. The wear sensors do need to be relpaced if the brake pads have less than 2.5mm on them. Apparently wear below the 2.5mm mark ruins the sensors.

Paying someone to swap those components is just... well.. not all that smart. If you can turn a wrench, you can replace your rotors and pads.
To jack up the car and do both fronts, it should take maybe a couple hours. tops. |
...not all parts are made equal so definitely ask for a break down of the costs (labor and parts) and see if you can bring in your own parts for him to install. these parts should last for a while so it'd be better if you can get exactly what you want and what works best.
which cross drilled ones is the guy installing? from the "S" model? FYI i've heard many cracked cross drill rotors in the low end market. hope this helps. |
This is the kind of things we did at the work on cars days.

whats with the goofy porshe sticker?

Be SURE you need new rotors before you replace them - dealers are notorious for suggesting that rotors need replacing when they do not. Most rotors will take two sets of pads before requiring replacement, and replacing pads is like putting on underwear, only without the underwear, and with a jack, and taking the wheels off.

I'm just about to place a purchase for a new set of Zimmerman rotors (84.95 per front, 86.95 per rear) and a set of Hawk HP + brake pads for $115 per axel. Grand total, not including shipping is $573.80. Granted, I'm doing them all myself.

Wow thanks!
You have all given me the courage to tackle this myself! Haha! I have replaced brakes on my old cars before (Japanese), I'm just a little intimidated by German engineering, hehe....
