I just rolled over 100k on my boxster on the way to drive the Dragon. What a great occasion to roll over this magic number...

after such a milestone how many non-maintenace repairs have you recorded?

I'm frankly amazed at how reliable after 30K miles of ownership my car has been.
just a clicker that has kicked the bucket, a new throttle body and a failed parking brake switch, I have a clicking that I can hear when I make slow turns but that's as short a list as I have had with any car.

Congrats RN. Noticed you've got S white-back dials and rings, did you do an instrument swap?

Also hope you are able to keep your '97 even after you buy a new Box. I can see it now: "For Sale - 97 Boxstser. Fine early example, fully sorted. One owner last 30 years. Many extras."

I must say that this Boxster although old and requiring the replacement of many parts, has been very reliable. I have never broken down or needed mechanical attention in an immediate way. This says a lot about the car considering I have driven it from Miami to Houston, Houston to San Diego to Yosemite to Las Vegas (through Death Valley) and back to Houston, and now Houston to the Dragon in Northern NC and back.

I guess I should be clear that I have taken a very proactive stance on repairs and maintenance... I have the car looked at every other month or so and when my mechanic finds problems we fix them immediately.

This has made the car rock-solid dependable for long trips.

I've replaced a radiator fan, coolant overflow tank, oil filler tube, the tranny, and two control arms since I bought the car. The tranny was a result of abuse from a previous owner though... not a defective or failing part.

All the rest of my expenses have been made to beautify the car. My most recent addition was the rear diffusers, which added a modest 25 HP :D

Yes and No. The process went like this:

A. I bought a new, unprogrammed cluster off eBay (just $275!) because my original one had a bad LCD segment. It is a 2.5 tiptronic cluster (notice the redline at 6500). I just took my right manual gauge face for the temp and fuel and stuck it over the lights for the tip gears and no one knows the difference. Since there's no electricity going to that part of the cluster, it doesn't light up anyway).

B. A year and a half later, I bought the silver TechArt gauge faces off eBay (just $71) and put those on. The bonehead employee of the speed shop in CA listed them to end at 3 am CST and no one sniped them but me, the early bird who set the alarm and woke up to buy them cheap.

C. The trim rings were a Christmas present from the wife two years ago, also bought off eBay for $105 (normal price... which is still too high for stupid aluminum trim rings if you ask me!)

...and that's why we now call your uncle "Aunt Mike."

The diffusers look great. I am having my front bumper repainted in a few weeks and have always wanted the diffusers. I know there were some fittment and attachment issues.

Now that they are on, words of advice? Do you recommend yours or a different source?

My diffusers were bought from that eBay seller that sells them all the time... excellent transaction, fast shipping, and the diffusers were beauuuutiful looking.

HOWEVER,

The holes on the bottom of my rear bumper did not match up with the diffuser's holes and we had to drill a couple of new ones. It was also a total pain in the butt to put them on without two people and a lot of tenacity.

Removing the rear bumper is probably the way to go (recommended by the seller) but I found that if I did this, I'd also have to remove the heat shields as well because the mounting screws go through the heat shields and the bumper cover.

So, I recommend that you give them to the body shop and let them install them after they paint them. You will be out some cash but you will keep your sanity.

Thanks Randall! How did the fittment turn out? Are they pretty flush or are the gaps noticeable?

My major concern is that it would be very obvious they are put on after the fact.

Any concern over the fiberglass beibg durable?
