Gotta love the PCA

I just had to share this story...

Just joined the PCA. Got my first issue of Spiel. After reading all the articles, I got to the For Sale section, where I found a posting for a used set of 996 headlights for sale from a fella that just upgraded to litronics. I jumped up and e-mailed him right away to see if they were still available.

Got him on the phone the next day, and was saddened to hear that his lights are the amber version - an early 2000 C4. I thanked him for entertaining me, but mentioned that I was searching for a used set with clear turns.

He then tells me that he believes his next door neighbor (who also owns a 996 - and also just did the Xenon swap) had the clear version, and that he'd go over to ask if he still has them - and if he would be interested in selling them. Next thing you know - I am meeting him at a Starbucks purchasing the lamps.

Asking price? $100!

One is perfect - one needs some polishing - but at a single C note I couldn't be happier.

Thanks PCA!

The Porsche Community is good to each other!

C5150, there was a good tech write-up just recently one the National PCA web site about polishing-up headlights. I'll try to find you a link.

C5150, this may help you:

Polishing Plastic Headlights

Question:

The plastic headlights are getting somewhat pitted on my '99 996 C2. I read somewhere that they are not a typical plastic material. Do you have any recommendations on polishing them? Even if I can't get the deep pits I'd be happy to clean them up as best as possible.

Answer:

Tiny micro pits can be lightly sanded with 2000 and soapy water then polished with Blue Magic and P21SI have removed simular damage on 997 driving lamps with great success.

Thanks bmus!

I bought a few different grits of wet/dry sandpaper (1000-2500), along with some polishing compound. All the marks are pretty superficial - so I don't think I'll really need to get that deep into it. I'll be sure to update once I get done.

Amazingly, something that works really well on clear plastic is Mothers Aluminum Wheel Polish. It comes in a little round tub and you can get it at any Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc.

If you feel uncomfortable using it on your headlights, try it on something you don't care about first. You'll see...

not only did you get a good deal you made some money. if you upgrade to the Litronics you can sell the clears and make a four or five hundred profit, which you can then use towards your Litronics. its a win win.
