Oil Prices

As you Californians know that $4 per gallon on 91 octane is just around the corner, the Unocal 76 in my neighborhood went up to $3.44 last night, a jump of $.13 overnight.
In San Francisco, a 91 octane went up to $4.18 per gallon

Costco gas is out of the question, had a bad experience (IMHO)! If I continue to use 76 station, will it hurt the Boxster if I pump it up with 87 octane instead of 91?

would you recommend other brand (i.e. Chevron/Shell)?

I would not recommend continued use of 87 octane.

1-I love Costco but their gas is junk IMO.

2-My experience with Chevron has been flawless. It is the only gas I buy.

3-No on the 87.

4-Buy a motorcycle. My Sportster gets 50MPG.

1) Say you drive your car 12,000 miles per year

2) You average 22 MPG

3) The price difference from 87 to 91 octane is 30 cents a gallon

4) It will cast you about $163.64 cents to use the correct (best available) fuel

yeah the cheap gas comes at a cost. In a cheap car with a cheap engine its not a big deal if you get mystery juice deposits left behind in your engine. The bucket of bolts will still get you from point a to point b. And went it reaches 150Kmiles and its time for the trash compactor.

Now in a benchmark sports car, you are taking a bigger risk for very little reward as bmusatti pointed out.

on a somewhat unrelated note, The Indy Racing League will be holding the indy 500 on ethanol. Sports cars on home grown fuel when will Porsche next??
Yes I know we don't grow enough corn to feed the beast but it would be great to see SUVs and Sports Cars stop running on unleaded.

When gas prices rise, folks do strange things. I saw a guy trade-in his 3 month old Durango because of a rise in gas prices. Hey said he could not afford to pay for the gas.

He lost $8,000 on the trade and never did a calc to figure out what his breakeven was on this trade.

Go figure!

I guess, i got caught by surprise and wasn't really thinking right this morning whe I post it up...

It is true that the money save on low octane gas will bite me in the rear after...
I just decide to ease off the gas pedal and cut down the revving

When gas was $1.00/gal for 87 octane, it was $1.30 for 93 octane. And now that its $3.00/gal it's still only 30 cents more. Actually instead of paying 30% more for 93 (at $1.00/gal) you're only paying 10% more (at $3.00/gal).

You're paying no more additional for premium now than when it was $1.30.


Does that make you feel any better. Sigh. I still don't feel better about the price either.

that's an excellent point...if everyone drove a little slower and put a little more air in their tires the amount of oil that would be saved in a single day would be mind boggling.

Forget slower, if everyone drove a little smoother I bet we could save more!

(dog forbid someone gets it in their head again that going back to 55mph speed limits is the best way to control consumption since people are too stupid to think for themselves!!!).

At the end of the day the price difference between pumping 91 or 87 is negligible. The savings that people think are there just dont exist. Make sure the car is well maintained and adjust your driving habits and you will see better results.

Sheeeeeeet... I just got back from Phoenix... driving the Boxster.

I averated 31mpg both ways. w00t!!
