Traffic Pro Install
Hey guys, I just bought myself a new Traffic Pro from Crutchfield. It seems like an easy install except for this reverse sensor that must be put in under the seat.
Anyone have any experience with this? Anyone know how to install that wire and run it to the Traffic Pro? Thanks, JBG |

Ask Tool Pants Professor Emiritus of Boxsters. He has shown over and over that he is knows this vehicle inside and outside. He will explain it to you and sometimes will even show pictures of the install. He is the source for your question.

Can I take a crack at this, so as to learn from my mistakes.
Are you trying to locate the back sensor [switch] in order to intiate some sort of beware signal of getting to close. If so it should be located on your transmission, and or off of your fuse block. The signal is activated when you place the vehicle in reverse it is activated by the reverse gear. This is typical for most transmissions, it is quite easy to locate because there should be no wires running to your transmission, besides this one. Please go to this page and open the transmission diagram, on the right hand side. I am sorry, I should preface this by saying the manual transmission should only have one wire. http://www.********************************************.com/model/986catalog/986.63-b.html Item 1. If I am wrong please feel free to correct me, I don't mind. |
Some people do not hook it up. But here it is.

See, I knew that Jeff knew. He always does :)
What happens if I don't hook it up Jeff? |
I can think of 3 people on renntech who did not hook it up but just grounded the wire, and they say it works fine.
I asked the mechanic at my dealer who puts them in what is the purpose of the reverse wire and he did not know. My guess is that it has something to do with what would happen if the antenna can not see the satelites, like if you were in a parking garage. |
See I learned:
Tool Pants: What is the "traffic pro" and the "reverse sensor " it is referring too. Obviously it is not what I thought it was. |
TrafficPro is a Becker navigation/radio unit that is the same size of the factory radio. Porsche sells it for about $1,600. It has been replaced by a newer model and now you can find it for $500 from companies like Crutchfield. As part of the install you are supposed to hook up a reverse signal wire from the unit to the reverse wire under the drivers seat.

BTW, if anyone is interested in it, I bought it from Crutchfield, and bought the "scratch and dent" of the Traffic Pro.
New Traffic Pro = $500.00 S+D Traffic Pro = $430.00 Use this code and get $20.00 off : pqgkt-8zqey-ked0c (for new customers, put in the special comments section) The Scratch and Dent allows you to return for ANY reason and they pay for shipping. Since it was free shipping to me, this essentially meant that there was NO risk at all. The Traffic Pro came in original box, with all the wire harnesses. Not a mark on the unit at all! I have no idea how it was scratched or dented. Perhaps the box that it came in. Hard to beat that price especially if you use that code. So Jeff, I have another question. You know anything about the CD maps? I hear that the ones you get for the Traffic Pro is from 2001, and that they're not shipping new maps? Know anything about that? |
I asked one of our local guys with TrafficPro about that and I do not remember what he said. If you send me an email I will put you in touch with him. There is also supposed to be some sort of TrafficPro help line telephone.

Alright Jeff. I'm stuck putting the antenna in. I popped off the cover to the alarm LED. I removed the 2 T-20 screws holding the alarm carrier to the dash, but I can't get the carrier out in order to get the wire under the dash. I can't seem to get the GPS antenna on the carrier into the dash (because of the metal plate that the antenna sits on)
Any hints? |
