Hardtop Opinions
Hi All,
Just wanted to get some other opinions on a hardtop I recently picked up for my Boxster. On one hand, I like the speed yellow (or I wouldn't have bought this color) and think I should have it painted body color but on the other hand I like how the black top contrast with the yellow (like the soft top) and think the having it all yellow might be too much yellow even though the top is be a relatively small part of the whole. As I have never seen my color Boxster with a hardtop in person I don't wanna drop several hundred $'s to have it painted only to hate it. Anyone here seen a speed yellow with the top? How did it look? http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box01.jpg http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box02.jpg http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box03.jpg http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box04.jpg http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box05.jpg |
I personally like the yellow and think you should paint the top to match.
Maybe someone with some photoshop skills can change that black to yellow in your pics to give you an idea of the final product? |
I voted to paint it yellow. Don't get me wrong - I kind of like the contrast - it's unusual and that's good. But it also makes me think of a hornet or yellow jacket (also not necessarily bad).
My only real comment would be to go that extra 1% and get the clear side markers.... Nice looking ride. |
if nothing else, i would paint the mirrors and windshield pillars that surround the actuall windshield black, wow that would look sweet

hehe,
well since im so nice (and sick and cant leave the house, heres a chop) including: clear side markers, clear tails, black mirrors with black windshield thing, red calipers, and i also got rid of theporsche logo on bottom, its your choice about that. anyways, onto the pic before http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box01.jpg and after http://i13.tinypic.com/2dgncs3.jpg |

Found a picture for you, even though it looks really washed out. I actually like the black... but then again (absolutely nothing personal!!!) I have never liked a yellow car, so that's just WAY too much yellow to me. Also, I would not paint the A pillar section that comes up around the windshield or the rear view mirrors black, because imagine what it will look like when you put the top down. All yellow with just those black would seem funny IMHO. |
Perhaps the black top would look awesome and original with black rims. Othewise, paint it yellow.

I don't know, there's something about the black side mirrors that does it for me. I bet it would still look pretty sweet with the top off.. How about one with black wheels?
EDIT: Great minds Z! |
Wow, pete, great minds think alike. :)

By itself it doesn't work. Neat idea, but you need it to compliment the whole look not compete with it.
|
I would like to change my vote...I originally voted to keep it all one color, after looking at the black mirrors that is good looking and unique...
|
DJ, come on. Black rims pls. :)
Z. |
Yeah DJ - come on with it already. Jeez. We know you aren't working - and we aren't either until you get those up there.... :)
|
Does this hurt or help? Take a look.
|
Ooooh. That is one unique and nice looking ride there my friend! Sporty without being ricer. Me likee! I don't usually like yellow!

Hey, pete, great minds also disagree, but at the same time, nevertheless. :)
|
No, I agree - I've never cared for the silver around the rim look - but I certainly like the direction the black rims are taking this "project".
|
Okay - I'm not master at Photoshop so leave the comments to yourselves. But, I spent a bit of time adjusting a few things like adding an aero kit, new wheels, etc. I think with a few changes it could look great.
Tell me what you think... (damn, forgot to deamber the side markers!) |

Oh, and I'd keep the A pillars yellow. Z. |
Hi all,
Thank you all for the input, comments and photoshopping... :D I definitely plan on getting clears for it. They have somehow been overlooked in the other lighting mods I have been doing to it... i.e. recent clear litronics and i have to put the 550 red taillights on it i have... is removing the tails as easy as the headlights? I had not even considered painting the mirrors and pillars black but that looks like a possibility if i keep the black top I am considering either having the wheels powdercoated or painted black (maybe hyperblack?) and possibly the lips polished if I can find a good shop to do it. Anyone ever had that done and were you happy with the results? What did it run per wheel? very nice ps examples dj, sp and i shouldn't forget denverpete's... ;) Thanks again, Ian |
ok you crybabies, here :D
and as for tail lights man, pull out the carpet in the back, theres i think 6 bolts going to them, unscrew the nuts off of them, and unplug ghte connector, swap, and thats all. shoul take you 20 mins at slow pace hehe before http://www.justgoofinoff.com/images/boxster/box01.jpg and after http://i13.tinypic.com/2dgncs3.jpg and black wheels http://i13.tinypic.com/4bs3rkg.jpg |
While I like the black wheels it would almost be a shame to get those beauties painted (not powdercoated - see other threads).
|
With black rims it opens up the "Paint the calipers" issue.....red or yellow?...hmm....
Does it ever end? |

Personally, I like the black top. |
Yes, if pastel yellow had been the only choice of yellow, I must say I would have been driving a different color Boxster.
Ronzi, I love the color of your Boxster .... :) What type/size of rims are you running....they look pretty sweet from what I can tell in your avatar pic. |

Pastel Yellow apparently wasn't a big seller as they phased it out after a yr or two, and it hasn't reappeared. The wheels are an aftermarket Sport Design style wheel, 8x18 and 10x18. I have never been able to establish what brand, but they are a one piece wheel vs the Porsche two (or three?) piece wheels. |
I like the black contrast and have been thinking of getting a black hardtop to go with the red (standard red) Box.
|
Not prejudiced at all... :D
Nice rims regardless of brand...i've like how the rears with a deeper lip look on the boxsters. |
I like the black rims for obvious reasons. But if you get the ones you have painted, they won't be able to polish or chrome those lips on those particular rims. Those are one piece painted silver. Nothing to seperate the spokes from the lip. You would have to paint them solid black or buy new rims that are at least a 2 piece with the seperate lip, either polished or chrome. ;)
|
i believe his are already a 2 piece
|
Speed yellow is a beautiful color for the Boxster. I'd paint the top to match.

I also have a Speed Yellow Boxster. I have been looking for a hard top and wondered if I found a black one would I leave it black or paint to match. Thanks to your pics, I say PAINT TO MATCH!. There's a fellow on Rennlist who has a SY boxster with matching hardtop. Looks quite nice.
|
I had a red hard top on my white Miata. I thought the red gave a little pizzaz to the drab white. Speed yellow is already pretty eye catching. I think the matching hard top on the Boxster gives the car a sleek appearance from certain angles. You can always have a black top when you are using the soft top.
However, you should do whatever makes you happy. |
