Subwoofers behind seats.

Hi.

For all those that are interested, I am having 2 subwoowers installed behind the seats over the next week.

Everything is being made custom and no chopping up is being done. I am getting a second amp installed in the front with a cover so you wont be able to see it.

Dash speakers have been replaced with 4 alpines and also the doors have been replaced with 13cm Alpine woofer.

Everything is being photographed so for all those interested I will post the finished pictures with a link to the installers website which will show the whole process once it is pinished.

Woofers were a little difficult as we only had 12cm to play with so I will post what products were used and also pictures of the speacial enclosures made for behind the seats. These are special subs that are only 10cm deep but should kick.

More details to come!!!!

Steven.

Thanks for the update, I will be interested to see what the install looks like and how it sounds. I replaced the dash and door speakers with JL audio units. My car did not come with rear speakers so I added 4 each 4' speakers behind the seats. I found that the rear speakers really help in filling in the sound field.

I am powering everything with JL audio Slash-series amps and a high-end Pioneer head unit. Sounds pretty good, much better than stock, but still needs work. I have have used a 1/3 octive RTA to check the frequency response of the system. It is pretty terrible without equalization.

The Pioneer head unit has a 15-band equalizer which I have used to help flatten the response somewhat, but that cannt make up for the lack of a subwoofer. Most of the sub installs I have seen go in the footwell, where did you get the idea for behind the seats?

Got the idea after looking at some work my guy has done

he makes moulded housing for subs to fit any shape. You have basically 12cm behind the seat to play with the seat back.(i am 6.1 so seat is pretty much all the way back). Each 'box' he makes will have about 11 litres of volume.

He ordered for me speacial subs that are only 10 cm deep!!

He did simular thing in a SLK and it did the job super.

I will post a list of all the equipment and pics and prices once done. I struck a deal where here will not charge me labour provided he posts the install on his website.

so im happy.

Best thing is nothing will be visible.

Once this is done he will put 4 x 2.5inch in the back.

Should be improvement on the stock stuff.

I hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ive had quotes to do that, fiberglass enclosure behind the seat. Mine would be 200 for one seat, whats yours?

Front trunk is the place to go....

Most subs in Porsche's go in the passenger footwell, and usually a 6 or an 8. There are some subs out there now that are very thin in depth, but most dont sound so good in my opinion. I just installed the Hertz MLK 3 system (6.5" woofers, ribbon midrange drivers and silk dome super tweeters) and was hoping to get away without doing a sub, but now looks like we're going to do a JL 6W0 in the passenger footwell.

I am however very interested to see your install.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I'm just starting to do my homework for an audio upgrade. So far for the low end I'm looking at these options.

We are winding up doing an 8W0 in the front passenger footwell, angled off the tunnel. Wil have pics this weekend.

Looking forward to see the pics... in my previous 986 I only used 2 x 6" reverse cone "super thin" subs behind both passenger/driver seat and the quality was terrible. So I really want to install proper subs this time...

What is a reasonable price for this type of enclosure? Guesstamate?

Cloudsurfer 05-10-2007 06:56 PM

Well....as for pricing, it really depends on how flexible and ambitious your local audio shop is. This is complete custom work, involving cutting, fabricating, and fiberglassing. As a guestimate I'd put it at somewhere around $250 from a good shape, obviously plus the cost of materials and equipment.

If anyone is close enough to Rochester NY I'd be happy to bring you down to the shop here for some top notch work.

Will post pics on Saturday.

Sub install is done and is absolutely GORGEOUS. Will have pics later today when I go get the car. We have a JL 8W0 in the left hand corner of the passenger footwell. Fully fiberglassed enclosure to gain as much cubic enclosure volume and to fit perfectly. The enclosure is countoured to look factory and retain good airflow off the floor heater vents.

We are setting up to do a run of these, I will start a new thread with pictures and pricing either later today or tomorrow. These will be sold loaded with the JL 8WO-4.

Can't wait to see how it came out... I know I'd still like to get a woofer in that little box in the footwell that was left by my car's PO.

Maybe later this year... I need the cashflow to pick back up after so much vacation and sick time last month.

Cloudsurfer 05-14-2007 05:29 PM

New thread is posted with pics and information on how to get one.
