New radio but lousy AM

I decided to upgrade the sound system in my 1999, gradually. Last year I replaced the amp which helped. Today I replaced the radio with a Pioneer DEH-P5900IB. I was pleased with the results but the AM reception is terrible. I know that this seems minor but I use AM for traffic reports, news and sports. The installer told me later that this was common with aftermarket radios. I guess no one under 30 listens to AM anymore. Any thoughts? Help.
I was also thinking about replacing the speakers in the instrument panel but getting ones to fit the speaker grille was going to require some modifications so I decided to pass for now.

Ditto--

Changed the head unit and terrible AM radio reception...no one I have asked seems to have an answer. FM is better than stock though! Anyone with help?? I miss my Rush Limbaugh.

There may be a black wire that needs a 12v connection for the antenna amp, all my previous Porsche have had this.

Marc,
Thanks. Actually it was a Blue wire on the 99 Boxster. They powered it up and I am now able to get AM.

Actually it's HD AM now!! But only if the station can come in. On the lower end of the dial 670-720 I can get good reception with some stations coming in as High Definition stations. At 890 and above all I get is interference. Problem is most of my listening is at 890 or above and I'll never hear these stations in HD if I cant get it to tune normally.
