Recovering int. trim pieces in leather.

I've been planning on repainting my trim pieces in silver but just for the heck of it, I decided to see what it would look like covered in leather. I redid the piece next to the door handle and I think it looks good but I'm wondering if the interior is starting to look too bland by adding more black. What does everyone here think?

Rob, you did a very nice job. But, I like the before better.

looks nice man, good job.
how did you get the leather to stay there? glue?

Grizzly 03-18-2007 09:12 PM

Yes, please detail how you did it for us.

As for your original question, I think it's hard to have too much leather.

I think it looks much better covered in leather, I'd take leather over painted plastic any day. It seems to fit better than a big piece of silver on the door. Nice job!

Great job. Could you tell us how you did it? Maybe too much black, but what about a different color leather? Grey, or maybe that other fabric...Alcantra?

Cool. Thanks everyone for the great feedback. Not sure if I'm going to keep it but I'm going to do a few more pieces while I make my decision.

All I did was cut the leather to the size of the trim with about 1" over hang on all sides. I used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. I sprayed both the leather and the trim piece, allowed both pieces to get tacky (about 30 seconds) and then applied the leather to the outside of the trim. I made sure everything was even and smooth and then started tucking and trimming the back side. I pre-cut some relief points before I started to make the tuck process easier.

I still need to do the other side so I'll do a write up and take some pictures of the process.

I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking of trying cinnamon leather (kind of a dark burnt orange) or a dark red. I also have some synthetic suede lying around somewhere (similar to Alcantra) I should try.

Hmmm...maybe it's time to go out and get some more leather...

Just teasing. Nice work. And a big improvement, too, no? :)

Wow. I like yours better. My leather has too much texture to it. I also love the yellow stitching.

Do you have any more picture of your interior and the roll bars?

John V 03-19-2007 02:09 PM

Not really, but I can go take some. Stay tuned.

Thanks... the car has some interesting factory options. I do like the full leather and deviated stitching.

Sorry for the long delay. I don't want to embed all these pictures so I'll just provide links. Sorry the pictures are not the best - by the time I finished cleaning the leather the light had become very flat. None of the leather is actually shiny in person, that's the effect of the flash.

I managed to find the leather to cover the door pocket covers and the door pull covers on eBay. I found a very fine-grain, very thin leather and got a great deal on it. It matches the factory leather VERY closely in color and texture.

On to the pictures.
