Best way is to put the top down, 1 leg in each leg area and pull up.

Yes, that is correct. It will come off. Do not hit yourself in the face but it will come off.

Hey if you had to cut the boot off but the plastic clips are still intact I would be interested. I have an aftermarket shift knob but during the install my plastic clips broke off and haven't found a great way to keep it fully attached. Let me know!
