Which LCD panel do you need?

Is it dot matrix or standard? I _might_ have a standard one that I can spare. These parts are not normally available separately, and one the only parts that makes a cluster unrepairable. I had a base Boxster cluster that had a broken housing that I was using for parts and the display might be OK. If you have a dot matrix OBC display cluster, you may be SOL.

How do I tell the difference? There is a part number on the back, will that help? Additionally I tried to replace it with an 01 LCD which was dimensionally smaller than the 03 I was replacing and it did not function in the cluster correctly.

The part number should tell all.

I think the 03 clusters are dot matrix.

They can be either, depending upon whether it came with the OBC or not. My original S cluster was/is non-dot matrix.

Mine came with OBC. I noticed the part numbers can differ between 03 S clusters. I found one on Ebay with my exact part number but the seller was very proud of it, and so he remains. I found another 03 with a similar VDO and the part number ending in FHB as mine did so I picked that one up. I also picked up new green blue and grey connector cam locks as mine seemed to be made of hardened play dough.

A word to anyone removing the cluster, the cam lock covers on the 3 connectors might break, no biggie, they are available new or contact Woody who might have good ones, and his prices are embarrassingly reasonable.

Those cam lock covers are likely to be brittle as hell due to age. Mine were and practically crumbled when removing the connectors when doing the OBC hack. Put everything back together, and the cluster works, but I have it on my list to get new replacements.

If you are getting a replacement cluster anyway, I would suggest getting a 996 cluster. The Voltage and oil pressure gauges are nice to have.
