Wanted: 2.5 Muffler

If you have one collecting dust in your garage, I'll buy it from you if the price is right. PM me!

l8braker 03-10-2006 05:07 AM

I have my Boxster S muffler sitting around if you want. PM an offer to me.

RandallNeighbour 03-10-2006 06:09 AM

Will a Boxster S muffler fit on a 2.5 without modification?

l8braker 03-10-2006 06:44 AM

Yeah all it needs is different hanger's. I think you can find the kit at a dealer easily.

Porschekid 03-10-2006 07:46 AM

No urge to upgrade since it went bad?

RandallNeighbour 03-10-2006 07:52 AM

Naw, mine's fine. I just want to experiment on another one with those bypass pipes. They're selling them for $400 plus s/h on Ebay from Europe and I figure I can try it for less than half of that if I can find a used 2.5 muffler.

RandallNeighbour 03-14-2006 06:42 AM

The S muffler will not bolt into my 2.5, and there is no hanger or bracket kit for an S, so an S muffler won't work for my little experiment.

Anyone have an old 2.5 muffler lying around your garage you want to sell me?

Randall,

Hi,

Have you seen this one? It's Modified and Thermal Ceramic Coated at much less than those from Germany. : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-BOXSTER-986-OEM-MUFFLER-EXHAUST-FITS-1998-1999_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33636QQitemZ804647 7203QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Hope this helps...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

RandallNeighbour 03-15-2006 06:50 AM

Jim, I've got that muffler on my ebay watch list right now.

I was kinda hoping to find a muffler for $100 plus hard shipping costs from someone on the forum here so I could get a muffler shop to weld up those bypass pipes like the ones from Germany and see how it sounds.

The one you referenced above has some work done to it already and I'd hate to do more to it as it's roughly double what I want to spend.

Thanks for pointing it out to me though!

Hi Randall,

I have the stock muffler from my 2001 Boxster available. (if no one has stolen it out of my back yard, I'll check tomorrow :) )

If that will work for you, you can have it for $100.00 plus whatever it costs to ship. Let me know,

Mike, I'll check to see if a 2001 2.7 muffler will fit on my 2.5 and get back with you.

I'd probably make a road trip up to get it just for fun... how many miles are you from Houston?

Randall, it looks like it is about 220 miles...if you drive like Rail26...it will take you about 2 hours!!

RandallNeighbour 03-16-2006 06:33 AM

Mike, I just checked my super duper brand new repair manual. Your model has two bolts sticking straight up on the top of it, and mine has a bracket and two bolts pointing toward the front of the car or away from the butt-end of the muffler. It won't fit.

So, I won't be driving to Waxahachie any time soon, and besides, there's so many cops on I-45 between Houston and Waxahachie that one can't possibly go more than about 80 without being nailed. Crafty little buggers use speed traps, instant on and laser down here. Must be all the drug runners from the border, which isn't that far away compared to, say, Iowa.

So everyone, I am specifically on the hunt for a 97-99 muffler. Newer ones won't bolt on straight away (I'm not interested in custom brackets). Anybody got one or know where I can get one cheap?

bmussatti 03-16-2006 06:46 AM

Randall, maybe you should call a few of the Porsche aftermarket muffler shops, and see if they have one available. You'd think they would have some as "take-offs" from their projects. Just a thought.

RandallNeighbour 03-16-2006 08:39 AM

I'll try that. The main concern is that they're not like my friends here on this forum... they're out to make a buck off anything and will probably price it far too high for what I'm willing to pay.

Bottom line is that I should at least try... I might be all wrong.

I'll let you know what I discover.

bmussatti 03-16-2006 08:57 AM

Randall:

I got a great contact from RUF Porsche. They told me to contact Oklahoma Foreign. The phone number is 405-799-0645 or 800-462-2446. The web site is www.oklahomaforeign.com. They are a specialty high-end junk yard.

They don't list your muffler on the web site, but I called, and they do have them. The price quoted over the phone was $200.

Give it a try.

Randall, I called Jay Rothfeld at Fabspeed, and he gave me the following contacts in Texas. They are autorized FabSpeed shops, and may have a take-off muffler for you. Hope this helps:

Thanks!

I think I got one. The guy on renntech.org (Todd) that did the 3.4 conversion on his 98 box has a 2.5 muffler he said he'd sell me for $100 plus hard cost of shipping.

I'm gonna keep these contact numbers just in case though. This deal might fall through.

BTW, Todd said he had a lower boost TPC supercharger on his 2.5 and said it did well for something like 40k miles, but wasn't enough power... so he went the 3.4 route for about 12,500.00 with a used motor. I wonder if the new SC kit being discussed here is any better or has higher boost.
