986 Boxster Test Pipes

Hi Che,

I'm considering buying the bypass pipes for my 2000 Boxster S. When I looked at the video you have on Ebay/Youtube, I noticed that the "after" install there was a lot more smoke coming out. Is this something I can expect with the removal of the secondary cats, or was it cold out?

Thank you.

PM sent about a set of test pipes and an exhaust.

Dlirium 05-13-2014 01:18 PM

I put this set on my 2000 S a few weeks ago. The two pipes on each side made for VERY easy and precise fitment. I was very please with the bending and finish, it fit perfectly for me.

I noticed three things -

1) My Borla exhaust lost its resonance around 2300 RPM. That was a GOOD thing
2) the Borla exhaust actually got a little quieter. Not good or bad. Different.
3) I had a terrible smell coming off for the first 50 miles or so as the coating cooked. It's gone now, and all seems to be working perfectly. I did not notice more/less smoke as I've been busy driving.

Note: I ordered a set of these but I do not have them yet installed. So everything I say below is from what I have read here on this forum.

If you have a 2000 or up then they do not affect emissions. Only the first set of cats (that are integrated with the headers) are monitored by the ODBII system. This second set of cats is unmonitored. So no codes on 2000+ because the cats these pipes replace are not monitored by the system.

If you have a 97-99 then these pipes replace the only set of cats in the exhaust so you would have to do something, get a spacer or something for that second O2 sensor.

I have heard that these let the exhaust breathe more freely, and that acceleration response is improved, and also that you save a fair amount of weight by removing the big clunky secondary cats. I have heard that the boxster needs at least one set of cats to provide some backpressure, or else low end torque will suffer, but you will pick up a little extra HP at the top end.

Supposedly it sounds a little better too.

I am looking forward to getting mine installed.

Steve

Its curious that no one has written a review on the website. I'm personally confident of the quality based on numerous "reviews" and threads about the products on this site. But if I were not a member I might be wary of purchasing something like this with 0 reviews on the website. Maybe I will write one after installation.

Bumped the Thread :D
