depends on your car. you have a 2001 (7.2 dme i think) so you only measure level 1 and 2 overrevs (level 1 is a bang into the limiter, level 2 is anything over). later cars (7.8 dme) have 6 ignition ranges as per boxster steve.
you shouldn't be overreving on the downshift. i can't think of a situation where the rpms would be so high, and the deceleration so minimal, that you would need to downshift and risk the overrev. a hot transmission and a shift into first instead of third, now that can happen ...
